John McCain’s Conservative “Credibility Canyon”

(Robert Stacy McCain) – Behind a Dunkin’ Donuts in a shopping center on East Cactus Road, J.D. Hayworth’s Senate campaign headquarters has a low-budget look. Near the front door, pinned to a cubicle wall, is a campaign T-shirt proclaiming Hayworth “The Consistent Conservative,” offered for sale at $15 each. Volunteers are stuffing envelopes at a folding table that holds seven telephones, the phone lines dangling down from the ceiling. A large bulletin board is festooned [...]

Shining the Light on Searchlight

(Chad Christensen) – The Nevada desert can be cold and windy, as it was in Searchlight, but the message was one of warmth and optimism. It was one of disgust with government, but a belief that we can turn this around and begin our sprint back towards Constitutional values. As a candidate running for US Senate against Harry Reid I know what this battle is like first hand. As a 4-term Nevada Assemblyman I have [...]

Shoppers set to Spring into Easter Spending

(Retail Association of Nevada) – The Spring season brings with it a feeling of renewal and consumers who have been trapped in a Great Recession for all of winter are starting to emerge with a new vigor for shopping. Earlier this week, WSL Strategic Retail released is biannual “Megatrends” study on consumer retail spending trends. This study, according to Candace Corlett, the group’s president, indicates that “Shoppers are making more stops to more stores, but [...]

The $2.5 Trillion Tip of the Social Security IOU Iceberg

(Paul Jacob) – This year, Social Security goes into the red, unable to pay out all that’s been promised . . . without somehow finding new funds. Five years ago, the estimated date for this was 2017. An economic downturn later and seven years disappear. Just like that. It’s obviously time for a major overhaul. But Congress and the President had other priorities. Don’t fix the old entitlement program — add a new one to [...]

Titus: Putting Your Tax Dollars to Work, for Herself

(Mark Noonan) – First-term members of Congress — led by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev. — are using a perk to blanket districts with mass mailings and other messages to promote themselves back home, particularly those in this year’s tightest election contests.

Tyler Andrews Seeks Assembly District 10 Seat

(NN&V staff) – Tyler Andrews, a local attorney and Las Vegas resident has filed as the Republican candidate for Nevada State Assembly, District 10. Andrews, a fiscal conservative, believes that Nevada can no longer afford the failed “tax and spend” mindset in Carson City. “It is time to take a stand against the out-of-control spending and over-taxation by our state legislature. It harms all Nevadans by driving out small businesses and limiting job opportunities,” said [...]

The Trailer Park Bonaventuras?

(Michael Zahara) – We all have our hillbilly relatives; what I don’t know yet is if Gloria and John Bonaventura are the hillbilly relations trading on their famous surname. Ordinarily, I’m the kind of guy who has an appreciation for those political people with ambition and drive; two necessary components for public office. I’ll make exceptions however, regarding Clark County Clerk candidate, Gloria Bonaventura; she is not only unqualified, she is also fundamentally dishonest and [...]

Enough is Enough, Time to Fire Berkley

(Michelle Fiore) – It was an honor to be in Searchlight this past Saturday with the Tea-Party Express Showdown and so many patriots that love this country. I felt as if we were assembled there much like the early citizens assembled at Boston Harbor, to stand up to a government we believe has strayed from the values this country was founded upon. Sarah Palin told T.E.A. (Taxed Enough Already) Party goers, “It’s not time to [...]

Markets work, even for those in poverty, UNR professors have it wrong

(Patrick R. Gibbons/Nevada Policy Research Institute) – Contrary to popular opinion, Nevada public education has not been devastated by budget cuts. K-12 schools still received more money this biennium than the last, while higher education has as much money today as in the booming 2005-07 biennium. Instead of focusing on how much we spend, we should focus on spending resources more effectively by adopting market-oriented reforms. Of course, progressives are still concerned that markets don’t [...]
