The challenge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has grown at an alarming rate in the last few decades. In fact, it is the nation’s fastest growing developmental disability. One in 68 children born today are expected to develop some form of ASD. Already, an estimated 3.5 million Americans live on the spectrum.
The Autism Society is the nation’s preeminent organization dedicated to improving the lives of all individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Since its founding in 1965, the Autism Society has worked to promote awareness and provide resources about the disorder. With affiliates across the United States, the Autism Society has led the way in increasing public understanding about autism — knowledge that can be critical for early diagnosis. The organization is a constant advocate for the best services and care for the individuals and families affected.
For four decades, the Society has highlighted the disorder with National Autism Awareness Month in April, and it has held the world’s largest conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders in July of each year.
In addition, the Society supports several research initiatives and helps interpret the many research studies and often-confusing findings. Its Environmental Health Initiative explores environmental impacts on brain development and public health, and its Treatment Guided Research Initiative studies individual responses to autism treatments.
The Autism Society understands the potential of each individual on the spectrum, and does vital work to improve the lives and promote the dignity of everyone affected by autism.
