(Washington, DC) – Today [November 21], Congressman Joe Heck (NV-3) released the following statement following the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction’s announcement that a bipartisan agreement would not be offered before the committee’s deadline.
“I am very disappointed that the committee was unable to accomplish its task and that last week’s balanced budget amendment vote failed. While I remained hopeful that both would be successful, I was prepared for a potential failure.”
“That is why I submitted legislation last Friday to control Washington’s runaway spending and reduce our deficit. H.R. 3494, the Restoring America’s Faith and Trust (RAFT) Act, will restore America’s faith and trust in the economy by reducing federal spending, reducing the size of the Federal workforce, and liquidating certain property of the federal government. This legislation is not a silver bullet, but it will have a positive impact on the battle to reduce our nation’s debt. The American people understand the significant danger our debt poses, and I remain confident that together we will solve this problem.”
BACKGROUND on HR 3494:
- Reduces federal spending to 2006 levels
- Implements a federal government hiring freeze to reduce the size of the federal workforce to 2007 levels
- Requires the federal government to expedite the sale of property currently identified for disposal
- Requires the federal government to identify land for disposal in states where the federal government owns more than 50 percent of the land
- Requires a sunset date on all federal programs
