(Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid called Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons “the worst governor in America” in an email sent yesterday to supporters seeking contributions for his campaign next year.

Robert Olmer, campaign manager for Gibbons, said he was mystified by the attack and references to “allegations that have either been proven false or completely baseless.”

Reid, currently chairman of the Clark County Commission, is the only major announced Democratic candidate seeking Gibbons’ job in 2010. Gibbons is facing a primary challenge from former federal judge Brian Sandoval and former North Las Vegas mayor Mike Montandon. Gibbons is trailing Sandoval in polls of GOP voters.

In the email, Reid said: “I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of the worst governor in America running our state into the ground. Remember when the FBI investigated him for selling his vote in Congress to campaign contributors? Remember the reports of secret meetings and the incompetent appointments? We need to send Jim Gibbons packing.”

Reid then asks for a contribution of $35, $50 or $100 to “take back” the governor’s mansion.

In his response, Olmer said: “Besmirching Gov. Gibbons, who is a veteran of two wars and is a decorated military pilot, puts Mr. Reid at the top of new lows in Nevada if not national politics.

“There is no excuse for these types of comments stemming from Mr. Reid and/or his campaign, and it might be prudent for him to focus on the job that he was elected for in Clark County – considering the myriad of problems that exist in his own backyard, instead of attacking Gov. Gibbons.”

In a continuation of his criticisms, Reid said Nevada’s potential is being squandered by a complete lack of leadership in Carson City.

Reid said: “He actually hurts us at almost every turn. Remember when he tried to refuse the stimulus funds? Remember when he insisted there was no crisis in the Nevada housing market? Remember the draconian proposed cuts to education, senior services, and even child protective services?

“It’s time for more than just a new governor, Reid said. “It’s time for a fundamentally new direction for our state. I’ve spent the last six years responsibly managing a budget that’s as large as the state’s, cleaning up lax ethics laws, and fighting for the most vulnerable among us.”
