(Christina Parreira)<\/em>\u00a0– The Nye County (NV) Commission is considering the adoption of a new rule in their brothel ordinance that would force women who work at these legal establishments to be \u201clocked down\u201d on the property for days at a time.<\/p>\n The actual proposed language reads\u2026<\/p>\n \u201cCourtesans are allowed to leave the Brothel Premises for six (6) hours per ten (10) day medical clearance period during the hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In a Las Vegas Sun article about this outrageous proposal, Nye County Commissioner John Koenig admitted that the lockdown provision was \u201cproposed mainly by the owners and the people who run the brothels\u201d and that \u201cno sex workers were included in conversations about the proposed changes.\u201d<\/p>\n How can you pass a law that so abusively harms these women without even talking to them?!!<\/p>\n And why aren\u2019t state legislators, women\u2019s rights activists and civil liberty organizations speaking out against this proposal?<\/p>\n The absurd \u201chealth safety\u201d argument for this lockdown policy is that a woman who leaves the brothel might pick up a disease that could be spread to customers upon return.<\/p>\n Can you imagine \u201clocking down\u201d doctors and nurses inside hospitals for 10 days out of fear they might pick up a disease that could be spread to patients?<\/p>\n Or \u201clocking down\u201d waitresses, cooks and bartenders for 10 days out of fear they might pick up a disease that could be spread to diners?<\/p>\n Here are three reasons why this proposed new government \u201clockdown\u201d rule is so wrong\u2026<\/p>\n 1.)\u00a0 If the concern is really public health, and not to continue the stigma against professional sex workers, then why even allow them to leave for six hours?\u00a0 You can get an STD in six seconds!<\/p>\n 2.)\u00a0 Condom use in brothels is MANDATORY, so brothel customers are already well-protected whether the workers leave the premises or not.<\/p>\n 3.)\u00a0 No such \u201clockdown\u201d rule is imposed in any other county that licenses and regulates legal brothels and there has never been a sexually transmitted disease (STD) outbreak that\u2019s been traced back to any of them.<\/p>\n Professional sex workers in legal brothels should be able to come and go as they please when not working, just like every other worker in every other legal business in Nevada.<\/p>\n ACTION ALERT<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n This \u201clockdown\u201d rule is a PROPOSAL only at this point.\u00a0 It still must be approved by the members of the Nye County Commission.\u00a0 It\u2019s scheduled to be introduced on October 15 and tentatively scheduled for a vote in November.<\/p>\n NOW is the time to voice your OPPOSITION.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s how to share your opinion with the five county elected officials who will make the final decision\u2026<\/p>\n Commission Chairman John Koenig<\/p>\n jkoenig@co.nye.nv.us<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Commissioner Lorinda Wichman<\/p>\n lawichman@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Commissioner Donna Cox<\/p>\n coxdonnac@msn.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Commissioner Debra Strickland<\/p>\n dlstrickland@co.nye.nv.us<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Commissioner Leo Blundo<\/p>\n
