The Biden administration says it has completed a court-ordered review that should ensure construction continues at the Nevada lithium mine, despite legal challenges brought by conservationists and tribal leaders.<br \/>AP Photo\/ Rick Bowmer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>(<em>Chris Woodward<\/em>) \u2013 A court-ordered analysis released by the U.S. Department of Interior means a proposed Nevada lithium mine can move forward.<\/p>\n<p>A DOI solicitor&#8217;s opinion\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/interior-department-announces-updated-guidance-mining-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0this week lays out &#8220;approaches that applicants may take to site waste rock and tailings facilities on federal lands under the General Mining Act of 1872,&#8221; the agency said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cToday\u2019s Opinion will support the timely review of mining proposals on federal lands and is one step of many the Department of the Interior is taking to update guidance for mining companies to reflect the realities of the 21st century,\u201d said\u00a0Deputy Secretary Tommy Beaudreau.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The DOI also announced the court-ordered analysis for the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ndep.nv.gov\/land\/thacker-pass-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Thacker Pass lithium mine in\u00a0Humboldt County near Nevada&#8217;s border with Oregon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Earlier this year, a federal court\u00a0upheld\u00a0approval of the lithium mine while ordering the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to do an analysis of mineralization on claims used for waste rock and tailings, Reuters\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-judge-orders-fresh-review-part-lithium-americas-nevada-permit-2023-02-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cBLM has\u00a0updated\u00a0the record to reflect evidence of mineralization on nearly all of the claims underlying the waste and tailings sites,\u201d the DOI said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Waste rock is considered the primary and most prevalent waste in mining operations.
