(Barbara Smallwood) – Thirty years ago, I chose to live in Nevada. The quality of life, the diversity of the people, and the opportunities for all of our citizens were, as they still are today, without equal.

This Assembly District 39 Republican primary race is critical for conservatives. I am a fiscal conservative. I’ve taken the Taxpayer Protection Pledge not to increase taxes. My opponents, however, have not signed the Tax Pledge.

I do not support the health district overlay study, which would allow new taxes to be created without voter approval. I also do not support the Vehicle Mileage Tax (VMT) which would increase gas taxes by replacing the taxes paid per gallon to a tax paid on miles driven.

I am concerned that the study to stabilize tax revenue will be used to introduce corporate and personal state income taxes, to which I am strongly opposed. Nevada’s favorable tax climate is necessary to keep our state competitive to attract new businesses and retain existing businesses for jobs.

As we did in Douglas County during my term on the County Board of Commissioners, we need to shrink the size of government. I agree with the Tea Party movement that our representatives are not doing enough to force the cost of government down. I will champion strong fiscal leadership to solve our current budget deficits, so that our children and their descendants can, decades from now, still experience the Nevada we know and love.

With zero based budgets, green/sustainable economic development, educational excellence through local district empowerment, protecting our right to keep and bear arms, fighting for state sovereignty, I will join like-minded conservative legislators to change our government to serve the will of the people.

I am in favor of extending the work of Governor Gibbon’s Sage Commission which identified and implemented private sector methods to streamline and cut costs.

I support the Budget For Outcome approach giving agencies less money but greater freedom and accountability for guaranteed outcomes.

I am “A” rated by the National Rifle Association 2010.

You have my commitment to work for you. I want to be your citizen legislator to take your ideas, opinions and arguments to the Assembly for you. I want to be your voice at the state level. I am open, accessible, available and enthusiastic. “Together we will be heard.”

That is why I am a candidate for State Assembly and I would appreciate your vote.
