{"id":5223,"date":"2010-05-18T10:56:33","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T17:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nevadanewsandviews.com\/?p=5223"},"modified":"2010-05-19T09:44:17","modified_gmt":"2010-05-19T16:44:17","slug":"a-tale-of-two-identical-mail-pieces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nevadanewsandviews.com\/a-tale-of-two-identical-mail-pieces\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Identical Mail Pieces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(Chuck Muth)<\/em> &#8211; Two Republican candidates running for the same office (state assembly) but in different, adjoining districts in Washoe County sent out <a href=\"http:\/\/files.e2ma.net\/39328\/assets\/docs\/copycat_candidates.pdf\"><em><strong>virtually identical mail pieces<\/strong><\/em><\/a> this week on the illegal immigration issue.  <\/p>\n<p>Their opponents are having a cow over it, with one stating in a news release that \u201cThis is clearly the product of a campaign and a candidate who isn\u2019t serious about solving Nevada\u2019s illegal immigration problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not.<\/p>\n<p>This is clearly the product of two candidates sharing the same views on the same issue who likely share the same campaign consultant who was able to save his clients a significant amount of money on the printing press by running the similar pieces at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>What these almost-identical mailers actually say is that the voters of the first district and the voters of the second district will both get representatives who agree in their opposition to illegal immigration and will be that much closer to achieving a majority consensus on what to do about that issue if both get elected. <\/p>\n<p>This is actually a smart piece of political \u201cstrategery.\u201d  After all, didn\u2019t every Republican running for Congress in 1994 sign on to the exact same campaign platform and run on it?  I think it was called something like the \u201cContract with America\u201d?  And I\u2019m pretty sure Newt &#038; Company were pretty serious about solving the problems highlighted in that campaign back then.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, the fact that Republicans running for the state assembly have never come up with a similar issue platform that all of them would\/could run on, thus reinforcing their message statewide, is a large part of the reason Republicans remain in the super-minority in the lower house to this day.<\/p>\n<p>If the one candidate had ripped off the other candidate\u2019s mail piece without permission, that would be a problem.  But conserving resources and running on a shared issue platform is just good politics and smart business.
