(Chuck Muth) – According to Harry Reid, the mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) are great for the Nevada economy.

“It’s been so terrific for our community, especially in these down economic times,” Reid told the Associated Press. “These fights fill hotel rooms and buy dinners, and people gamble a little bit, so from that perspective, it’s really wonderful.”

So naturally, it wouldn’t be in Nevada’s best interest to encourage UFC competition in other states, right? But that’s exactly what Reid plans to do.

Mixed martial arts fights are banned in New York – including New York City which regularly competes with Las Vegas for some of the world’s biggest traditional boxing bouts. But Harry Reid says he’s going to fight to end the fight ban.

“I’m going to see what I can do to help in New York,” Reid told the AP. “I’m aware of the issue, and I know a few people in New York. I’m going to see if I can talk a little sense to them. … I think what they should do is approve the concept and have some great fight cards. It would be great for the state of New York.”

Sure, it’d be great for the state of New York to have some great fight cards. But Reid supposedly represents NEVADA!

Why in the world would he actively work to send UFC matches from Vegas to NYC? Why is Harry Reid trying to fill hotel rooms and restaurants in the Big Apple rather than Sin City?

Personally, I don’t care if New York legalizes mixed martial arts or not. It’s a free country, and Vegas will just have to compete with New York in the marketplace if it does. But that’s not the point. I’m not suggesting that Harry Reid try to block New York from legalizing the fights; I just don’t want him going out of his way to help the competition.
