(Eric Morelli) – As the economic downturn has devastated the state of Nevada we can no longer tolerate business as usual in Carson City. We need a legislature that will help to create the conditions to bring our economy back to life and encourage businesses to produce jobs.

My name is Eric Morelli and I’m running for Nevada State Assembly in District 3.

Nevada’s hard-working families and businesses have been decimated by this economy. More Nevadans are unemployed than ever before. Many of those fortunate enough to be working have had to endure reductions in wages, benefits and hours. Businesses have been forced to make cuts just in order to survive. That is why government cannot be allowed to increase its burden on already-strapped workers and employers.

As Nevada’s families and businesses struggle to make ends meet we cannot afford a government in Carson City taking even more of their hard-earned money to fund politicians’ and special interest groups’ wish lists. We must demand that government live within its means and work to build a structure in which businesses can create jobs and the economy can grow.

Having attended myself and with three of my children currently in the Clark County School District, no one has more of an interest in a strong public education system than I do.

We can no longer afford to leave the decisions about our children’s educations to bureaucrats in Washington, DC or Carson City or the West Sahara Taj Mahal. We must return control to the people closest to the children and empower them – give them the knowledge and authority to make informed decisions.

We can no longer tolerate a public school system that is unresponsive and unaccountable. We must demand one that exists for the benefit of the children and not of the adults.

My opponent (Assemblywoman Peggy Pierce, D-Las Vegas) is a three-term incumbent who has a history of voting in lockstep with her party. She voted for the two largest tax increases in Nevada history and has consistently voted in favor of increasing the tax burden on hard-working Nevada families and businesses.

Her solution to every problem seems to involve taking more money out of the hands of Nevada citizens to feed a growing government bureaucracy.

As unemployment was skyrocketing last year, she twice voted to make it more expensive for businesses to employ people. As spiraling public employee salaries and benefits created an increasing burden on struggling Nevada families and businesses she sponsored a bill to allow state workers collective bargaining rights, which would have made it more difficult to control these costs. As Nevada workers watched their paychecks shrink she went on record advocating for increasing their taxes.

In Assembly District 3 the choice is clear. Do we want to elect a political insider who favors big government and an even bigger tax burden? Or do we elect a fiscal conservative who will improve education and fight to allow you to keep more of what you earn and to help Nevada’s businesses create jobs and prosperity?
