$7.6M Spent in a Week – But Where Did It Go? | DOGE NEVADA’s Weekly Newsletter

Welcome back to DOGE NEVADA’s Weekly Newsletter – your watchdog briefing on how Nevada spends your money. Each week, we dig into statewide purchase orders, vendor contracts, and agency budgets to reveal where millions of taxpayer dollars are really going.

This week’s spending snapshot shows $7.6 million in purchase orders – with over $6.8 million flowing to de-icing chemicals at the Department of Transportation. That’s nearly the entire week’s spending concentrated in one area.

Beyond the numbers, our latest investigations expose a $29 million fleet budget gap in Fernley and allegations of $575,000 in credit card fraud at Washoe County School District. These stories show why transparency and accountability matter now more than ever.

Narrative Summary

This week’s purchase orders were dominated by the Department of Transportation’s early winter procurement of de-icing chemicals—over $6.8M across four vendors. These bulk purchases dwarf all other spending, suggesting the state is stockpiling for the upcoming winter season.

In contrast, the Governor’sTechnology Office made a large $429K investment in IT equipment/services through SHI International Corp. Other departments showed relatively minor activity, with only routine operational spending.

The disproportionate size of DOT’s chemical contracts raises questions:

Are these competitively bid?
Is Nevada over-committing to one season’s supply?
Are vendors charging consistent rates across contracts?

Fernley Fleet Budget Gap: $29M Budget vs $3M Reality

DOGE NEVADA uncovered a massive gap in Fernley’s fleet budget: officials reported $29 million in fleet spending, but records show only about $3 million in actual vehicles and equipment since 2012. Budgets list a few hundred thousand dollars per year, while “actuals” spike into the millions. Whether it’s sloppy bookkeeping or hidden spending, the numbers don’t add up—and Fernley taxpayers deserve answers.

Shameful Six-Figure WCSD Credit Card Fraud Allegations

A new report alleges over $575,000 in credit card fraud inside Washoe County School District (WCSD) between 2021–2025. Maintenance staff allegedly made duplicate purchases and diverted refunds into personal accounts. At the same time, tools at the Huffaker Maintenance Center keep disappearing without audits or investigations. Weak controls and missing oversight raise serious questions about how WCSD manages taxpayer money—and whether accountability even exists.
