A Star is Born
In the 1953 movie classic “Hondo,” John Wayne encountered a young boy by the river who advised that he couldn’t swim.
So the Duke responded by picking him up and tossing him into the water, telling the concerned mother, “Time he learned. Everybody should swim.”
Yep, that’s how I taught my kids to swim, as well.
Under close supervision, I just tossed ‘em into the deep end and – lo and behold – swimmers! Heck, they were jumping off the high dive even before they learned how to read.
Which brings me to my eldest daughter, Kristen.
She’s 25. And while she’s been *around* politics all her life – with me as her dad, it was unavoidable – like most twenty-somethings, she’s not really *into* it.
But, wisely, she IS into learning this new artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the hope of using it to open her own business sometime in the future – a “cat café.”
So for the past six months, she’s been learning how to use AI tools to generate articles for Nevada News & Views (NN&V). Has it down pretty good now.
But she’s never been an actual “reporter” covering live political events. That changed Wednesday night.
I was already scheduled to have dinner with a congressional candidate that night, so I couldn’t make it to the debate for the candidates running to be the next Clark County GOP chair.
But I do want to expand our coverage in NN&V to include events like this which usually aren’t covered by “old-stream” media outlets – or are covered with a decided anti-conversative media bias.
So I decided to throw Kristen into the deep end and have her cover the event without the benefit of me being there to guide her on who to talk to and what to ask.
She was, naturally, a bit hesitant at being thrown into the lion’s den without Russell Crowe by her side.
But I explained that there was no way she could screw it up. Just get the who/what/where/how, a few quotes, and just report on what happened.
Told her that if the report stunk on ice, big deal. We just wouldn’t run it – and I’d explain what to do better in the future.
Anyway, Kristen’s report was on my desk when I woke up this morning. I was anxious to read it – and figured I’d have to do some major editing for her first time out.
Nope.
While it’s not quite Pulitzer Prize material (yet), I didn’t have to do any editing other than add a comma in one of the sentences. Talk about a proud papa!!
So without further ado, here’s “ace reporter” Kristen Kniep’s first political piece…
