Las Vegas City Council to Ward 2 Voters: Sit Down, Shut Up, We’ll Pick for You
Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman recently resigned from her Ward 2 seat to take a position with the Trump administration – creating a vacancy.
Now, you would think the voters of Ward 2 would be the ones to pick Seaman’s replacement. But you’d be wrong.
Instead, the five other members of the city council – who don’t even live in Ward 2 – will be anointing the next representative of Ward 2.
This is absolutely wrong – no matter what excuses the council throws out there.
Their biggest excuse is that a special election in December would cost the city $500,000.
Gimme a break.
First, holding elections is one of the FEW legitimate roles of government that our tax dollars fund.
Secondly, $500,000 is a PITTANCE compared to the roughly $286 MILLION the city lost and wasted by trying to screw over Yohan Lowie, the developer of the defunct Badlands golf course.
And that doesn’t include the MILLIONS of wasted dollars the city spends on “non-essential” government services.
Like that $12 MILLION pickleball facility. And don’t give me that B.S. about it being a “federal grant.” We all know money in government is fungible.
Then there’s the fact that 1 in 5 city employees earn six-figure salaries – including $281,000+ for a city paramedic, almost $239,000 for a deputy city marshal, and another $239,000 for the city manager?
And these people want to piss and moan about a comparatively measly $500,000 so the voters of Ward 2 actually get to vote on who represents them in Ward 2 rather than five council power-brokers who are guaranteed to “grease” the appointment of some political insider?
All Las Vegas voters should remember this screw-job by the current city council members when the primary election rolls around next June. Throw ‘em all out!
