Sunday evenings when I was in high school in the 1970s were always a treat. My friends and I would joy ride around town listening to Doctor Demento playing one wacky song after another and singing along.
Kids.
And it was always a special treat when a Tom Lehrer song came on. “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” was among my favs…
Spring is here, spring is here.
Life is skittles, and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year
Is the spring, I do, don’t you? Course you do!
But there’s one thing that makes spring complete for me
And makes every Sunday a treat for me:
All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon
When we’re poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you’ll see
My sweetheart and me
As we poison the pigeons in the park.
Lehrer was a satiric songwriter/pianist who cranked out political and social commentary in the 50’s and 60’s.
“An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer” was a cherished album – long before 8-track tapes came on the market.
I remember teaching a number of his songs to my kids when they were growing up. We actually had fun using the “New Math” song while homeschooling them on addition and subtraction.
You can’t take three from two
Two is less than three
So you look at the four in the tens place
Now that’s really four tens
So you make it three tens
Regroup, and you change a ten to ten ones
And you add ’em to the two and get twelve
And you take away three, that’s nine
Is that clear?
The song even included an explanation of “Base 8” arithmetic – which I doubt any of our present-day high schoolers have ever even heard of.
And my eldest daughter, Kristen, couldn’t believe it when she saw “Harry Potter” actor Danielle Radcliffe – one of her favs – singing “The Elements” song, which we also employed for homeschooling, during a TV appearance.
There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium,
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,
Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium,
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium,
And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium,
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.
If you didn’t grow up with Tom Lehrer, you don’t know what you missed. Comedic genius of the time. He passed away this weekend at 97.
Thanks for the memories, Tom. RIP.
