Nevada State Assembly Candidate Kelly Chapman: I’ll Lower Your Car Insurance!

You don’t need me to tell you – things are expensive right now. Every trip to the grocery store feels like a punch in the gut.

But there’s one family bill that’s been particularly cruel lately, and it isn’t just inflation’s fault. It’s your car insurance.

Nevada rates are soaring. I’m talking about some of the highest increases in the country, and that’s not right.

As your neighbor, and as someone who wants to serve you in the State Assembly, I’m fed up. This isn’t just an accident; it’s bad policy.

Here in Nevada, we are getting hit with a “perfect storm.”

The Las Vegas Review-Journal recently spelled it out perfectly. They showed that high vehicle theft rates, serious accidents, and even regular old inflation are driving up costs.

But you know what else is driving it up? Our state government.

It’s created a system that makes it harder for good drivers like you, while rewarding bad behavior.

I won’t stand for it, and I’m ready to champion real, common-sense changes.

My plan starts with putting you, the consumer, first. We need a free market, not more government control.

The first step is competition.

Right now, Nevada makes it hard for new insurance companies to set up shop here.

Why? More competition is the only thing that ever lowers prices. When insurers have to fight for your business, you win.

I’ll push to remove those regulatory barriers. It’s time to let more companies into Nevada so you actually have a real choice.

Next, we have to talk about the “litigation tax.”

Every time you pay your insurance, a good chunk of that money isn’t going for actual car repairs or medical bills. It’s going straight into the pockets of high-priced lawyers for things like “pain and suffering” lawsuits.

We need real tort reform. That means putting reasonable caps on those non-economic damages.

Now, critics say that’s unfair to victims. But it’s also unfair to you.

Because when every minor accident turns into a lottery, guess who pays for the jackpot? You do, in higher premiums.

Let’s bring predictability back, so insurers can price policies fairly.

And we need to fix the regulatory speed-traps.

The current system is slow. Insurers have to wait months for state approval before they can adjust rates based on real-time data. That’s foolish.

I’ll advocate for a “file and use” system. If companies have the data to support a rate change, let them make it.

Market competition will stop anyone from charging too much. The government shouldn’t be gumming up the works and driving up your costs.

Finally, let’s address a hidden government surcharge.

Nevada has a very high insurance premium tax. It’s a literal tax on your safety. Every time you pay for insurance, you’re paying an extra tax to the state.

And because the tax is a percentage of the premium, as rates go up, the state gets even richer off of you.

That’s shameful government waste. We must cut that premium tax immediately.

We also have to get serious about uninsured drivers. They cause accidents, and guess who pays? We all do, through our “uninsured motorist” coverage.

It’s time for some aggressive enforcement. We need real-time checks to identify people driving without insurance and make sure they face serious consequences.

No more letting lawlessness penalize hard-working families. It’s about personal responsibility and law and order.

Nevada is my home, and I want it to be affordable for everyone.

I’m running to fight for you. When I get to Carson City, lowering your car insurance won’t just be an idea. It will be a priority.

Because it’s your money, and you deserve a government that respects it.
