Mesquite Shows What Happens When Families Choose Value Over High Costs

Americans may be tired of rising prices, but they’re not giving up on family time.

They’re just getting smarter about how they spend their money.

With airline costs climbing and gas prices still painful, many travelers are skipping airports and choosing road trips instead. And one Nevada town is benefiting in a big way: Mesquite.

That should get the attention of anyone who cares about tourism, local jobs, and common-sense economics.

Families Are Adjusting, Not Quitting

According to Airlines for America, jet fuel prices jumped 65% after conflict involving Iran, pushing airline costs higher and helping drive expensive ticket prices.

When flights get too pricey, regular families do what families always do. They adapt.

Instead of paying for airfare, baggage fees, rental cars, and overpriced airport snacks, many are loading up the SUV and hitting the highway.

That’s where Mesquite comes in.

Located near the Arizona border, Mesquite has long been known for golf, gaming, and easy access to parks like Zion National Park and Valley of Fire State Park. Now it’s becoming a go-to stop for travelers looking for value.

Local Businesses Are Seeing the Surge

Managers at two local resorts told 8 News Now they’ve seen more visitors arriving by car.

Julia Abouzeid, general manager of Virgin River Casino & Lodge, said families still want to get away despite the economy.

“We are seeing more business,” she said. “We are seeing those families coming.”

She said many guests are driving in from Utah, California, and Las Vegas for long weekends.

Tom Jannarone, general manager of CasaBlanca Resort & Casino, said travelers are choosing domestic trips over costly overseas vacations.

“A lot of people I’ve talked to right now, they don’t want to fly overseas,” he said. “It’s too much money.”

He also said they’re seeing younger visitors, couples, and families.

That matters because tourism doesn’t just help casinos. It helps restaurants, gas stations, retail shops, golf courses, and working families who depend on visitor spending.

A Lesson Nevada Leaders Should Notice

There’s a bigger lesson here.

When government policies drive up energy prices, everything gets more expensive. Flights cost more. Shipping costs more. Family vacations cost more.

But when communities stay affordable, clean, safe, and easy to reach, people come anyway.

Mesquite is proving that.

While bigger cities chase expensive projects and flashy promises, Mesquite is winning with basics: value, convenience, and hospitality.

Sometimes economic success isn’t complicated. It’s about making life affordable enough that families can still enjoy it.

Nevada Still Has Work To Do

AAA recently showed Nevada gas prices averaging about $4.95 per gallon. That’s still a punch in the wallet for commuters and road trippers alike.

Imagine how much stronger travel could be if fuel prices were lower and inflation was under control.

Critics may say tourism rebounds happen naturally. There’s some truth to that. But smart policy still matters. Taxes, regulations, and energy decisions all reach the family budget eventually.

And when families feel squeezed, they change behavior fast.

Why Mesquite Matters

Mesquite is being called a hidden gem. Maybe it won’t stay hidden much longer.

At a time when many Americans feel priced out of travel, this Nevada town is reminding us of something simple.

People still want freedom. They still want adventure. They still want to make memories with their kids.

They just need places where they can afford to do it.
