Meet the Socialists Who Want to Run Your Bank, Your Job, and Your Power Company
I want to tell you about a group with some pretty extreme ideas. Then I'll tell you about my opponent, who’s a dues-paying member.
The group is called the Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA. You've probably heard the name. What you might not know is what they actually want.
The DSA platform calls for abolishing the police or slashing their budgets.
Think about what that means for your neighborhood.
Fewer officers on patrol. Slower response times when you call 911. Less follow-up when your car gets broken into or your business gets robbed.
They also want to abolish prisons, or come close to it.
That means fewer tools to keep repeat violent offenders off the street. More reliance on probation and treatment programs that are already stretched thin.
Isn’t it bad enough already that your toothpaste and deodorant are being locked up at the grocery store instead of the shoplifters who steal them?
On immigration, the DSA wants to dismantle ICE entirely and end deportations – even for violent criminals.
Here in Nevada, that would mean even more pressure on our schools, our hospitals, and our housing market, all of which are already stretched by rapid growth.
And it doesn't stop there.
The DSA platform calls for replacing capitalism with government and collective ownership. Nationalizing utilities, railroads, and banks.
A single government-run banking system.
A government jobs guarantee for anyone who wants one, funded by you, the taxpayer.
Canceling student and medical debt across the board, with the bill landing on people who already paid theirs off or never took on debt in the first place.
They even want to nationalize fossil fuel companies and phase them out fast, which would hit Nevada families hard at the gas pump and on their power bills.
Their platform even calls for restructuring the Constitution itself, including abolishing the U.S. Senate.
That's not a fringe wish list. That's the DSA’s actual platform.
Now here's the part you really need to know.
My opponent in this race, Vinny Spotleson, is a dues-paying member of the Las Vegas chapter of the DSA.
Not a sympathizer. Not someone who once attended a meeting. A member, in good standing, of an organization built around these ideas.
Here's something else that might surprise you.
A lot of people assume the DSA is mostly a movement of working-class minorities looking for a better shake. The data says otherwise.
National Review columnist Rich Lowry looked at recent primary results around the country and found the opposite is true.
“The wave of socialist victories in Democratic primaries is being driven by well-educated white voters who are more extreme than the rest of the Democratic coalition,” Lowry wrote.
“Socialists may imagine themselves the champions of people of color and of workers,” he continued, “but their movement is, by and large, most attractive to Caucasian associate professors of sociology who think they haven’t achieved the station in life that they deserve.”
To be fair, Spotleson isn’t a sociology major. He has bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Government – which is arguably even worse than getting a degree in sociology.
Indeed, while his “day job” is a public school teacher – in one of the worst-performing school districts in the country – his full-time profession is a far-left political and environmental activist.
So when you think about who should represent Assembly District 41, ask yourself a simple question:
Do you want a representative who believes in strong public safety, a fair tax system, and government that lives within its means – or one who's paid dues to join a movement that wants to abolish the police, end prisons, and hand your bank and your power company over to government control?
I know where I stand. Nevada families deserve to know where Mr. Spotleson stands, as well. Now you do. Vote accordingly.
