(Karri Bragg) – On Tuesday evening, conservative families gathered for a little laid-back fun at Citizen Outreach Foundation’s first-ever Kids Happy Hour & Deck Party.
The event, the first of its kind in Southern Nevada, was held at Joe’s Crab Shack in Green Valley. A smattering of public schoolers, private schoolers, home schoolers, and pre-schoolers, hung out in the sandy playground while their parents’ kept a watchful eye from Joe’s open-air deck.
Parents enjoyed a cheap margarita or iced tea and enjoyed beautiful Vegas autumn weather while talking local politics. Gubernatorial candidate Mike Montandon, former mayor of North Las Vegas attended with his family, giving other guests a chance to quiz him on taxes, the economy, and jobs. Perspectives were shared and fun was had by the “old” folks.
As for the kids, they were captivated by the shenanigans of three clowns from Zelzah Shriners (http://www.zelzahshrine.com), the organization perhaps best known for assisting children with disabilities and birth defects. When they weren’t begging for a balloon animal or chowing down on a bucket of fish and chips, kids enjoyed the cool evening on the monkey bars.
The only “speechifying” that took place was when Elizabeth Crum, editor of the Nevada News Bureau, asked folks to say hello to a group of local Marines who were on hand to collect toys and donations for the Marine Corps’ Annual Toys for Tots drive. The Marines even hung in there to hear an almost-rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” in celebration of their 234th anniversary.
The Kids Happy Hour deviated from the usual First Friday Happy Hour format, allowing families to enjoy an inexpensive, educational, and fun evening out!
