Debunking Ten Democrat Lies About the SAVE America Act

(David Catron) – Since the Senate debate began on the SAVE America Act, the Democrats have spent an awful lot of time denouncing the legislation as part of a sinister Republican conspiracy whose ultimate goal is to prevent legitimate voters from casting ballots in federal elections.

Yet when they describe the provisions to which they object, every Democrat senator has misrepresented those sections of the bill or made absurd claims about their effect on the electorate.

Even when they are talking about the legislation’s actual language, they lie about their own positions.

Here are ten of their biggest fibs:

Lie # 1 – The SAVE America Act is a “voter suppression” bill

This is the most frequently repeated lie about the SAVE America Act. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), for example, describes his party’s position on the SAVE America Act as follows:

“Our objection as Democrats is not to a photo ID… our objection is it’s a voter suppression bill.”

No one in the Senate is fooled by that, of course, so Republicans decided to call his bluff.

Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) requested unanimous consent to pass a bill with only a single provision—that voters must produce a photo ID when they cast a ballot. The Democrats blocked it.

Lie # 2 – The SAVE America Act is unpopular

Schumer continued to lie not only about what the legislation does but who supports it.

Standing in the well of the Senate he claimed, “Voter suppression. That is what the Republican Senate is wasting our time on: pushing a voter suppression bill that most Americans do not support, a bill that appeals to only the most fringe elements of the MAGA base.”

In reality, according to a CBS/YouGov poll conducted last week, 80 percent of American adults said they favored a law that requires individuals to produce a valid ID before they are permitted to vote.

Lie # 3 – The SAVE America Act would force everyone to re-register to vote

Another lie the Democrats have been peddling about the bill was parroted by Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) during an appearance on “Morning Joe.”

Kelly claimed that if the bill passed, “Everybody would have to re-register to vote. Think about that 80-year-old senior who doesn’t have a passport or can’t find their birth certificate.”

But as Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) correctly wrote in a response on X, “Nothing in the SAVE America Act requires currently registered voters to re-register. Senate Democrats should read the bill before attempting to describe what it does.”

Lie # 4 – The SAVE America Act isn’t needed

Another common whopper the Democrats tell is that a bill that prevents non-citizen voting isn’t necessary because it’s already illegal for non-citizens to vote.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) asks, “Who’s going to commit this kind of fraud knowing that they could be in prison for five years?”

Well, perhaps people like Mahady Sacko, an illegal alien from Mauritania who has been voting in our elections since 2008 according to the Department of Homeland Security. Or Muhammad Muzammal and Muhammad Shakeel, noncitizens who registered to vote and then voted in the 2020 election in New Jersey. Or 19 foreign nationals who voted in the 2016 election.

Democrats like to claim that cases such as these are “exceedingly rare.” But the reality is that it is impossible to know just how widespread noncitizen voting is.

There has been no verification of citizenship during voter registration in decades, meaning that there is no way for authorities to identify and track noncitizen voting in most cases.

Yes, there are currently penalties for noncitizen voting.

But it is also astoundingly easy for noncitizens to register to vote and cast ballots, and it is nearly impossible to prevent that sort of fraud – and in Democrat states at least, they don’t have any interest in preventing it in the first place.

The SAVE America Act finally adds enforcement and accountability mechanisms to laws already on the books.

Lie # 5 – The SAVE America Act would force every voter to get a passport

Yet another Democrat lie about the SAVE America Act involves passports.

On Friday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) claimed, “Under the Republican SAVE Act, millions of Americans who don’t have a passport could have to pay $165 just to register to vote. Kind of like a poll tax, isn’t it?”

Sen. Lee also debunked this absurd claim on X, pointing out, “This simply isn’t true. Read the SAVE America Act before you mischaracterize it. Starting with the text beginning on line 22 of page 12—which makes clear that this argument amounts to paranoid fantasy.”

There are plenty of other forms of ID that would qualify to register to vote besides a passport.

Lie # 6 – The SAVE America Act disenfranchises married women

Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) expands on the passport canard by claiming, “The SAVE Act goes further—demanding documents that millions of Marylanders don’t have, including married women who changed their last name and those without passports.”

Democrats claim that because married women’s birth certificates won’t match their married name, they won’t be able to vote under the SAVE America Act.

But one additional document – a marriage certificate – would allow them to register all the same, just like a marriage certificate is required to obtain a new passport and REAL ID.

The bill also provides a process (referenced above by Sen. Lee) for those who can’t provide proof: They can sign a sworn affidavit confirming their citizenship status.

Lie # 7 – The SAVE America Act prevents black people from voting

This false claim that the SAVE America Act disenfranchises married women inevitably leads to the equally false assertion that it somehow prevents blacks and Hispanics from voting.

Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) stood in the Senate on Friday and defiantly declared, “In this moment I stand here and say, No, to Jim Crow 2.0.”

This is a grotesque combination of demagoguery and historical ignorance. The implication is that non-white Americans are too stupid to figure out how to show an ID to register to vote. Also worth noting: Jim Crow was wholly conceived and perpetrated by Democrats – not Republicans.

Lie # 8 – The SAVE America Act is a federal takeover of elections

Rep. Pete Aguilar, the head of the House Democratic Caucus, has accused the SAVE America Act of being “a federal takeover of state and local elections” – a claim parroted by other leading Democrats.

But the SAVE America Act is remarkably limited in scope – it merely requires that people are citizens when they register and who they say they are when they vote. States will still run their own elections.

If anything, the SAVE America Act is designed to stop efforts by Democrat states to corrupt federal elections by dismantling any and all election security safeguards.

Ironically, it was Aguilar and his Democrat compatriots who most recently attempted a federal takeover of elections.

Back in 2021, the party advanced two bills, the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which would have, among other things, mandated universal mail-in voting and ballot harvesting nationwide and instituted a blanket ban on Voter ID.

Lie # 9 – The SAVE America Act actually undermines election integrity

Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) offered voters one of the most absurd conspiracy theories on the SAVE America Act:

“Democrats are fighting to secure our elections & uphold the Constitution. Republicans are actively cutting election security safeguards & trying to give Trump unprecedented power over elections in all 50 states.”

This not merely false, it is hypocritical. This is precisely what the Democrats attempted when they last held a governing trifecta in 2021 and 2022. Had they succeeded in passing the “For the People Act,” all U.S. elections would have been controlled by the DNC.

Lie # 10 – The SAVE America Act will “destroy democracy”

Perhaps the most unhinged Democrat objection to the SAVE America Act came from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) who insisted that the Senate must “Say NO, NO to a bill that would so fundamentally and far-reachingly would undermine, in fact, destroy our democracy. It may sound like an exaggeration, but it is the truth.”

There’s no point in responding to this nonsense by asking Democrats to explain how a bill that prevents noncitizen voting would destroy our democracy. It obviously wouldn’t, but Blumenthal isn’t concerned with facts.

Ironically, some of the claims made by Democrats inadvertently admit that illegal aliens are voting.

On Friday, for example, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer contended that the SAVE America Act wasn’t really about voting: “Do not listen to the Republican talking points about voter ID. That’s a ruse. Underneath the surface, the SAVE [America] Act is a voter purge bill.”

He was referring to its requirement (page 17, line 24) that states remove non-citizens from their voter rolls. Why would Schumer object to “purging” these ineligible voters from the rolls?

The answer is obvious. The Democrats can no longer win elections if only American citizens are permitted to vote.

There is no other explanation for their opposition to a bill that enjoys the support of 80 to 90 percent of Americans – including a majority of rank-and-file Democrat voters.

But their “leadership” clearly believes that, if illegal aliens are prevented from voting, it will be the death knell of the Democrat Party.
