Vicki Dooling is well-known and highly-regarded tea party leader and a Republican candidate for the Nevada state Assembly. She does not have a GOP primary opponent and will go straight to the general election in November. The following e-interview was conducted by Nevada News & Views publisher Chuck Muth…
What seat are you running for and where?
Assembly District 41 in Clark County
Why are you running?
To help Republicans with their votes in Carson City. More Republican Votes.
What are your qualifications?
Entrepreneur in business, as well as corporate director of sales and marketing for a public corporation. Plus a number of years working on campaigns and in politics.
Who is your opponent(s) and what’s wrong with him/her/them?
Paul Aizley, and he is one of the most liberal voters in Carson City. He seems to introduce legislation for his own personal agendas instead of bills that will be of help to our community and state.
Why did you sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and how do you respond to the criticism that it locks you in and doesn’t give you any flexibility to negotiate in the Legislature?
I signed the Pledge as I don’t want to raise taxes. I believe we should start every year with a zero based budget and there is plenty of fat and pork to be removed from the budget as opposed to expanding it every year with more taxes. I still believe that if we are reviewing a bill that certain individuals want the votes, they will need to speak to every legislator!
Philosophically, how would you generally characterize yourself – moderate, fiscal conservative, social conservative, libertarian-conservative, constitutional conservative, or something else? Explain?
I am a fiscal, social and constitutional conservative.
What is the proper role of government?
To protect the citizens from foreign enemies.
What are your top THREE issues and why?
1. Economy and Jobs, too many regulations and laws that constrict businesses.
2. Education, remove the Dept of Education and bring it back to the states, school vouchers and school choice will give the parents a choice.
3. Obamacare, I would vote to repeal and remove and go back to private insurance protection with people being able to purchase insurance across state lines.
If Gov. Sandoval again breaks his word and proposes extending the “sunsets,” in whole or in part, will you vote for or against the extension? If against, what would you cut to make up for the reduced revenue that would come in?
I will vote against the extension. As to what I would cut to make up for the reduced revenue, I would roll back, across the board, the annual increase in the budget for all departments/services of the government.
Should Nevada’s Modified Business Tax (MBT), the tax imposed on large employers for every employee they hire, be repealed? If so, what would you replace it with or what would you cut from the budget to make up for the lost revenue?
Again, we must not look at increasing the budget over the previous year. I believe we need to adopt a zero based budget, and start from scratch each budget cycle. Every budget cycle, EVERY department in government must justify not only their existence, but their level of funding.
Would you consider a revenue-neutral tax reform proposal that would broaden the state’s tax base by reducing the sales tax on goods and imposing it on certain services? Why or why not?
I would ask the question: What are we trying to accomplish?” Taxes (by any other name…”fees”) are taxes. We need to adopt a zero based budgeting system and determine in every budget cycle, what is necessary and what is merely an “increase.”
Have you read the new Nevada Republican Party platform and if so, do you support it in its entirety? If not, which planks do you have a problem with?
I do not agree with the fact that they sidestepped the issue of “marriage.” However, I do agree, that this is an issue that should not be a part of the government dialog.
There is a petition being circulated that would repeal Gov. Sandoval’s Silver State Exchange, Nevada’s home-grown ObamaCare program? Do you support or oppose this initiative and why?
We cannot only look at the establishment of the Silver State Exchange, we must also include the expansion of Medicade as well. The broadening of Medicade coverage is being paid for in its entirety by the US Government until 2017. In 2017 it becomes the responsibility of the taxpayers of the State of Nevada…and how do we propose to pay for this???
Do you support or oppose the proposal to repeal Nevada’s ban on gay marriages? Why or why not?
I support the Constitution of the State of Nevada…period.
Assuming you do not support deporting all 12 million-plus immigrants who are currently in the United States illegally, what do we do about them?
Inasmuch as this is a totally Federal issue, anything I have to say would merely be an opinion and of no importance, close the borders and require every illegal immigrant to register for a work visa and that will start the process of applying to be legal. They will either leave, or be here illegally…..and be arrested…..enforce the laws that are now on the books..
Do you support and would you co-sponsor a bill to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry their weapons on college and university campuses? How about elementary and secondary school campuses?
I don’t believe the 2nd Amendment should be restricted in any form or manner….
Assuming you support school vouchers, do you support them for everybody regardless of family income, or only for low-to-moderate income families. Explain.
I support school vouchers for everyone…period.
Who are the top three conservative leaders who have had the greatest influence on your political thinking – and Ronald Reagan doesn’t count (he’s a given)?
I believe Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Scott Walker speak to my concerns above all others. Although Ben Carson is new to the political scene, I am a huge fan of his.
If you were to host a dinner party at your home for four guests, living or deceased, which four people would you invite and why? Oh, and Jesus and Moses are busy that night and can’t make it.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, George S. Patton, and Norman Schwarzkopf.
What is your campaign’s website address and why should anyone go there and donate to your campaign?
My website is: www.vickidooling.com, Go to my website to understand who I am, and what I stand for…… especially if you want new blood in Carson City. You should donate to my campaign because if every Republican in Clark County gave just $5.00 to every conservative candidate,………. I,( as well as other conservatives) would have the money to operate a winning campaign. All good conservative candidates will be representing every person in Nevada when they go to Carson City and vote on bills.
