How This Super Bowl Sunday Sucked: Let Me Count the Ways

(Chuck Muth) – I really didn’t have a dog in the fight yesterday.  All I was hoping for was a good game. What a letdown…on so many levels.

I tuned in just as the “Black National Anthem” was sung.  Ugh.

Imagine if someone suggested singing a “White National Anthem.”  This crap needs to end.  We have ONE national anthem…and it’s for everybody.  As it should be.

And nobody has ever done it better than Whitney Houston in 1991. Still chokes me up watching it to this day.

I’d also note that the name of the “Black National Anthem” is “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” but there were no white or Hispanic or Asians in the choir that I could see.  So the title, to be accurate, should be “Lift Every (spelling helps) Black Voice and Sing.”

At least the NFL finally got rid of that stupid “End Racism” slogan on the field in the end zone.  But it replaced it with an equally stupid “Choose Love” slogan.

I’d prefer the NFL end ALL such political statements. But if they want to stay in tune with where the country and its fans are right now, they should have gone with, “End DEI.”

The best part of the game was when the ever-irritating Taylor Swift was shown on the Jumbotron…and got boo’ed loudly.  It appeared she was taken completely off-guard by the crowd’s response, seeming to mouth, “What’s going on?”

Um, your fifteen minutes of NFL fame possibly, finally, hopefully, thankfully, coming to an end, that’s what.

On the other hand, when the cameras found President Donald Trump standing and saluting our nation during the Star-Spangled Banner, the crowd erupted in cheers.

America. Is. Back.

The commercials sucked…especially the flag football ad supposedly showing a female football player leaving a trail of men in her wake.

And part of the allure of the great Super Bowl ads in the past was the surprise element.  No one knew what the ads were until they aired during the game.  This year, the more promising ads – like the racy Carl’s Jr. ad – were released to the public days before.

It was like finding out the sex of your baby before he/she is born (yeah, I’ll get letters on that one).

Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show sucked.  What the hell was that all about? Leading one guy on X to tweet…

“For years I have been paralyzed, stuck in a wheelchair. But when (Kendrick) started performing at the halftime show I gained the strength to get up and turn that trash ass music off! Thank you, Mr. Lamar, for all you do for the disabled community!”

Sorry, but rap is crap. Bring back the likes of Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, U2, Aerosmith, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty – or at least throw in a good “wardrobe malfunction” here and there.

And lastly, the game sucked.  It was never close.

Mahomes was a dud – thanks to his O-line (let alone the refs) not protecting him.  Saquon was a dud. Kelce was a dud.  There just wasn’t anything “super” about this Super Bowl, except Mahomes’ post-game statement…

“Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom. I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.”

Total class.

Hosting it in New Orleans was great, but Vegas did it better.

I think every Super Bowl should simply rotate between the Big Easy and Sin City every other year – though there are some red flag warnings about Vegas that cropped up on social media during the game.

Even when the “Big Game” – which the media and businesses stupidly have to call it instead of the Super Bowl thanks to the NFL threatening sue anyone who calls it the Super Bowl without paying a fee – wasn’t played in Vegas in the past, Vegas was awash in folks coming here just to watch it on TV at SUPER BOWL parties.

But rooms at resorts on the Strip for this year’s SUPER BOWL were going for as low as twenty bucks a night.  Vegas, we have a problem.

Part of the problem is those $20 rooms really didn’t cost you twenty bucks because the hotels tack on “resort fees” that often exceed the cost of the room itself.  For example, when I checked yesterday the Luxor was advertising $21 rooms – with a $45 resort fee added on checkout!

Then there’s the ever-rising cost to park your car.  No more cheap buffets.  Backed up traffic.  Insane waits to check in.  Obnoxious pan-handlers and beggars seemingly on every block.

The corporate casino bean-counters have been slowly and quietly killing the goose that lays Vegas’ golden eggs.  We need somebody to Make Las Vegas Great Again.

And I’ll close this rant out with a non-Super Bowl item…

Nevada’s race-hustling attorney general, A-Ron Ford, keeps issuing breathless press releases announcing lawsuits against the Trump administration and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), trying to protect things like…

  • $1.5 million to “advance diversity equity and inclusion in Serbia’s workplaces and business communities”
  • $70,000 for production of a “DEI musical” in Ireland
  • $2.5 million for electric vehicles for Vietnam
  • $47,000 for a “transgender opera” in Colombia
  • $32,000 for a “transgender comic book” in Peru
  • $2 million for sex changes and “LGBT activism” in Guatemala
  • $6 million to fund tourism in Egypt

“Know that as the top legal officer in Nevada,” he declared a couple days ago, “I will not stand idly by when Nevadans come to me for help. Do not despair – we are fighting for you.”

Au contraire, mon frère.  The only thing you’re fighting for is waste, fraud and abuse – and using OUR tax dollars to do so.

Americans all across the country overwhelmingly elected Donald Trump – and by extension, Elon Musk – to take a chainsaw to bloated and wasteful government spending.

All you’re doing is wasting Nevada taxpayer dollars trying to abuse the court system to block those efforts.

One can only image what he’d waste our money on if elected governor in 2026 – perish the thought!
