Lombardo Threatens to Veto NLV Charter Bill

(John Latshaw) – Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo has said he will veto a bill (SB184) to expand the North Las Vegas city council put forward by Democrat Senator Pat Spearman, according to Ben Kieckhefer, his chief of staff.

The governor’s office said Lombardo would not sign legislation amending a city charter that had not been processed through the charter committee.

“Mayors throughout Nevada have made it clear that they value the voice of their constituents when considering changes to their city charters,” Kieckhefer wrote in a statement.  “The Governor agrees.”

North Las Vegas officials opposed Spearman’s bill, saying it was brought forward without input from the committee.

North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown also opposed the bill citing increased costs for a larger city council, while several members of the 13-member charter committee testified in support of the bill.
