(John Burke | Better Nevada PAC) – Nevada Democrat Assemblywoman Shea Backus has been one of the biggest opponents of school choice in the state, but now – at risk of losing her re-election – she’s desperately telling voters whatever she thinks they want to hear.
In a new interview with the Nevada Independent, Backus was asked about Nevada’s Opportunity Scholarship program, which grants scholarships to children in low-income families so they can attend safer schools that fit their needs.
Backus claims that she’d be “open to maintaining funding for students who are already enrolled in the program.” But Backus didn’t mention that she already voted against funding the program at existing levels.
Last August, Backus was one of the Democrats who voted along party lines against a plan put forward by Governor Joe Lombardo to protect existing funding for Opportunity Scholarships after Democrats cut its funding.
Despite having already voted to slash funding for this program, Backus is now trying to fool voters by claiming she’ll protect it.
Shea Backus already proved that she couldn’t be trusted when she served on the board of an organization that defrauded the state of Nevada, now she’s trying to mislead Nevadans about her record in hopes of saving her political career.
And what about the thousands of Nevada students who are in failing schools and would like to have the opportunity to go to a different institution where they can succeed?
Backus thinks government should decide, not parents. She doesn’t deserve another term in our State Assembly.
