MUTH’S TRUTHS
Worst Idea of the Year
There’s scuttlebutt going around about putting a school choice proposal of some sort on the ballot in Nevada next year. Big mistake.
School choice ballot initiatives have consistently lost at the polls over the last 30 years – including in UTAH, of all places.
In fact, since 1978 every statewide ballot initiative seeking to expand school choice or private school vouchers has failed, regardless of whether the proposal was universal or targeted to specific populations.
Part of the reason is that suburban white voters don’t want low-income, urban minority kids coming into their schools. That’s a big reason many fled to the suburbs in the first place.
Call it racism if you want, but it’s also a reality.
Legislative efforts to enact school choice programs have succeeded, but when put to a direct vote by the public, such measures have been overwhelmingly rejected.
If you want school choice in Nevada, you either have to:
1.) Elect Republican majorities to the Legislature with a Republican governor who will sign a bill, or . . .
2.) Gov. Lombardo is going to have to draw a line in the sand and force Democrats in the Nevada Legislature to vote for it or suffer the consequences.
He has leverage. Now he should campaign on the issue so he has a mandate to use it if re-elected.
