MUTH’S TRUTHS
And Now – The End Is Near
Today is, mercifully, the final day of the 2025 session of the Nevada Legislature – unless, gosh forbid, we go into overtime.
And I gotta say, with the exception of the 2015 legislative session – you remember, the one where a Republican governor and a Republican Senate and a Republican Assembly passed the largest tax hike in state history – this is the worst I can remember in 30 years.
Not because Democrats are passing so many bad bills – we expect that; it’s what the do.
But because so many Republicans voted with them on those bad bills, giving the D’s “bipartisan” cover which dilutes their value as campaign issues next year.
So let’s talk about vetoes.
There are some conservatives – especially Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Victor Joecks – who have been chirping like high school mean girls at Gov. Joe Lombardo for the entire session without regard to the fact that, unlike Sandoval in 2015, he’s saddled with a big Democrat majority in both houses.
Victor’s a solid think-tank policy guy, but politics certainly ain’t his area of expertise. Our Brittany Sheehan has the latest example. Click here.
Anyway, Democrats in the Senate have a 13-8 advantage. In the Assembly, it’s 27-15. But here’s the thing Victor and others ignore…
If Gov. Lombardo vetoes a bill, Democrats need a 2/3 super majority – 14 votes in the Senate and 28 votes in the Assembly – to override the veto. Which they don’t have.
UNLESS…
Unless one of more Republicans in both the Senate and the Assembly votes with the Democrats on an override.
So if the Democrats pass a bill on a straight party-line vote…13-8 in the Senate and 27-15 in the Assembly…the Democrats won’t have the 2/3 super-majority they need for an override.
And if the governor signs such a party-line bill, then conservatives have reason to look at the bill and decide if criticism of the governor for not vetoing it is called for.
HOWEVER…
If a crappy bill passes with one or more Republicans voting with the Democrats in each house, that means the Democrats have enough votes to get the 2/3 needed to override a gubernatorial veto – and it’ll become law anyway.
Unless the wayward Republicans grow a set and refuse to vote for the override of a bill they voted for. That’s far from guaranteed with this bunch.
As an example, the new education bill, SB460, just passed unanimously in the Senate. Victor’s been quite critical of it. But there’s no way all eight Republicans who voted for it would vote to sustain a veto.
On the other hand, the Dems in the Assembly just passed a truly horrible “election reform” bill (AB534).
However, all 15 Republicans stuck together and voted against it – meaning if the governor vetoes it, the Dems won’t have the votes to override him. It’s all about math.
Now granted, there may be some symbolic PR value in vetoing a bill that’s only going to get overridden and become law anyway. But that’s a pyrrhic victory.
In reality, the problem isn’t Gov. Lombardo not vetoing a bad Democrat bill that received Republican votes, but GOP legislators – a number of whom ain’t exactly rocket surgeons – face-slapping conservatives and the governor by giving aid and comfort to the libtard majority.
So those of you who, like Victor, are already calling Lombardo “weak” and a “coward” and a “RINO” are misdirecting your fire.
The REAL culprits are the Republican legislators who voted with the Democrats to dump those bills in the governor’s lap.
If it makes you feel better to call the governor names without directing even greater venom at the GOP legislators who put him in such a bad position in the first place, have at it.
For the rest of us who recognize and understand political reality, the solution to this problem isn’t to just elect more Republicans to the Legislature in 2026…but BETTER ones, as well.
While I was singularly focused on successfully preventing the Democrats from attaining a veto-proof majority in 2024, this current crop of GOP legislators has once again proved that Republicans never blow an opportunity to blow an opportunity.
Let the primaries begin!
