MUTH’S TRUTHS
(Chuck Muth) – I’ve been on the fence over these film tax credits for Hollywoodesque film studios in Nevada. Honestly, with so much else going on, I really haven’t had time to look into them closely.
But a full-page ad in Sunday’s Las Vegas Review-Journal pushed me into the “No” column.
Paid for by a real estate developer called “Gardner Group,” the ad declares: “Senate Bill 220 will generate $1 billion from the private sector for education.”
Red Flag #1
So right off the bat, we have a developer with a stake in the game spending money on a full-page ad in the RJ – which ain’t cheap! – to encourage the Nevada Legislature to give it a heckuva lot of taxpayer dollars.
The phrase “feathering their own nest” comes to mind.
Red Flag #2
$1 billion? Pretty lofty claim – unsubstantiated and likely overblown if past is prologue. It’s a tired and true PR tactic to blow smoke up taxpayers’ skirts by promising pie in the sky.
Red Flag #3
The money’s going to “education”?
Gov. Lombardo gave the failing Nevada public schools some $2 billion in the last legislative session. How’s that working out for our state, where we remain at the bottom of the list for education?
Now, if the money was going to go to a school choice program that would allow kids from low-to-middle income families so they could escape public education’s Failure Factories, that would be a horse of a different color.
But, of course, it’s not.
Red Flag #4
The ad claims that for every $1 in film tax credits, “$1.02 is returned to the Nevada Tax Revenue Stream,” thereby making it “a revenue neutral bill.”
Which sounds eerily similar to Wimpy’s (of “Popeye” fame) favorite line: “I’ll gladly pay you on Tuesday for a hamburger today.”
Sorry, I ain’t buying it.
Red Flag #5
To take action and contact your legislator, Gardner Group asks you to type out (no hot link available in print ads) this long URL:
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/division/research/library/faq/whichlegislatorrepresents.html
You mean they’re spending this much money to ask for $1 billion in taxpayer subsidies and they’re unfamiliar with link shorteners such as this: tinyurl.com/3c7p3z2t
Sorry, but based on past experience I suspect a PR con game is afoot. We’ve seen this flim-flam film before. Absent a much stronger argument to the contrary, put me down as a “No” on SB220.
