Robot Dogs Are Taking Over the SAHARA This Weekend, and That’s Just the Beginning

Robot dogs are coming to the SAHARA this weekend – and that's just the opener.

Down the hall, women can participate in a free self-defense class. Families can watch a live K9 demonstration.

There's a whole floor of drones, biometric fingerprint-locked firearms, and nonlethal gadgets. A youth zone runs the whole weekend so kids have something to do that isn't just standing next to their parents. And 15 guns are being given away over the weekend, one every hour.

That's the scene organizer Heidi Gray is building for ARMOR Las Vegas, a security and preparedness expo running this weekend, August 29 and 30.

I sat down with Gray for lunch and to talk about the upcoming event, and she was blunt about the one thing ARMOR isn't: your average gun show.

Guns are just one piece of a much bigger floor. Drones. Bulletproof backpacks and notepads. Cybersecurity. Home security tech that hasn't hit mainstream retail yet. Want your concealed carry? That class costs a little extra, but you can get it while you're there.

It's more like a Comic-Con for all things defense.

Gray's real goal sits past this weekend, and it's bigger than any one fix.

“ARMOR is redefining what ‘protection' looks like today,” Gray said. “From personal safety to protecting your home, business, and even your digital world, we’re creating something that people can actually step into and experience for themselves.”

Schools. Families. Kids vulnerable to trafficking. Women who want to feel safer by carrying a weapon but want an option that isn't a firearm.

ARMOR isn't about any single piece of tech that solves it all. The goal is building a crowd big enough that decision-makers have to listen.

And to do that, it's got to be an event people want to attend. Somewhere that everyone, regardless of familiarity with guns, can learn more about how to protect themselves and our communities.

Gray has hosted a number of traditional gun shows, and she's built ARMOR on top of that knowledge and experience. But ARMOR is unlike anything she's worked on before.

It's for the person who's never seen a gun in real life, and it's for the one who keeps a gun in the nightstand.

It's for the young woman looking to protect herself in her first apartment, it's for the parents who want safer schools for their kids, and it's for the small business owner wanting to protect everything they've built.

Once ARMOR pulls in real numbers, Gray wants to be able to walk into rooms with senators, county officials, and school districts and make the case for whatever protection gap they're not funding.

Gray's the first to say she doesn't have it solved. “I don't have the answer,” she says, “But there has to be more things that we can do to protect the people in this town.”

So that's the whole bet: make people want to walk in, make it inviting and get people talking, and then the harder conversations follow on their own.
