President Donald Trump just dropped a big idea for how America will celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026.
One of the most talked-about parts of his plan is a new youth athletic competition called the “Patriot Games.”
The idea is in the fall of 2026, high school athletes from every state and territory will come together for four days of competition.
Each state will send one young man and one young woman chosen as top athletes to compete.
The goal is to shine a spotlight on teamwork, discipline, and physical strength – the kind of values most of us grew up striving for.
President Trump said this idea is about celebrating “the greatest high school athletes”, showing what young Americans can do when given a chance.
These events will be part of a broader slate of celebrations under the banner of Freedom 250 and America 250, which honor 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776.
Every state and territory is getting involved, including Nevada.
Nevada has set up its own America250 Nevada planning events that will run for six months from January through July 4, 2026, with local celebrations, community events, and chances for everyday Nevadans to share their stories about what it means to live in the Battle Born State.
For many Nevadans, the celebration is a chance to show off local pride in the Silver State.
What Else Is Happening in 2026
The Patriot Games are just one part of the celebration. Plans also include:
-
A Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington with exhibits from all 50 states.
-
The largest fireworks show in the world for the July 4 celebration.
-
A UFC event at the White House featuring some of the world’s top fighters.
All of these events will be tied together under the America250 umbrella, which was created to help Americans reflect on our history, celebrate our freedoms, and look toward the future.
The celebration is backed by a bipartisan commission created by Congress years ago, and now the White House is helping lead the effort through what they call the Salute to America 250 Task Force.
Critics’ Take
Democratic politicians and commentators on social media have been posting memes and jokes, and some have questioned whether spending attention on big celebrations is the best use of government resources.
But for many Americans, especially conservatives and parents, this feels like a fun and positive way to celebrate our country’s history – and to spotlight bright young Americans who work hard every day in their communities, classrooms, and on their sports teams.
A Celebration Worth Remembering
The 250th celebration of America is way more than another excuse to throw party.
It’s a moment to think about what makes America special: freedom, opportunity, courage, and community.
With events across the nation and activities in states like Nevada, this anniversary could be a great time for families to teach kids about what it really means to be an American.
And for the hundreds of young athletes who may one day be called “Patriot Games competitors,” it’d be a memory to last a lifetime.
