(Lori Piotrowski) – Earlier today (June 18, 2011), members of the Nevada Republican Central Committee (NRCC) met in Sparks, Nevada, to determine who would represent the party in the CD2 special election. The election, which will be held to fill Senator Dean Heller’s recently vacated Congressional seat, will be held in September.
Candidates were nominated from the floor, according to special rules drawn up specifically for today’s meeting, and of the many possible candidates, only three men were nominated: Mark Amodei, Greg Brower, and Kirk Lippold.
The candidates drew cards to determine the order in which they would address the NRCC: Lippold, Amodei, and Brower then addressed the crowd. The members were able to ask questions of each candidate and then cast their votes. Out of a possible 323 votes, one candidate won 221 votes from members, a veritable landslide. And Mark Amodei was welcomed back to the podium with a standing ovation to give what may be the shortest acceptance speech on record: 1 minute, 30 seconds.
After lunch, the members reconvened to elect a new Nevada Republican Party chair. Two candidates, both from Clark County, were nominated from the floor: Amy Tarkanian and Patrick McNaught.
Again, after listening to candidate speeches and brief Q&A sessions, the members turned out to vote.
Tarkanian garnered 224 votes to McNaught’s 92. McNaught graciously took the podium to ask that the body move to grant a unanimous decision to his opponent, which was quickly passed.
The newly elected chair vowed to work with McNaught to improve the party, raise funds, and elect Republicans to local, state, and national offices.
