(Kathleen Miller) – Harry Reid went to congress with the votes of his fellow church members who understood that he was in agreement with the teachings of his church, that it is a sin to take an innocent human life. But going back as far as 1997, Harry has been a good friend of those who support and make their living from abortion.
In looking at his record you will find that Harry will vote for every poison bullet amendment that would kill a bill restricting abortion, but if those fail, he votes in favor of the final bill so that he can come back to the state and tell us that he is ‘pro-life’.
“Reid is one of the pro-abortion movement’s strongest assets in Congress,” Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said this week. “He has employed the full powers of his leadership offices to do the bidding of abortion lobby on all of the issues most important to them, including keeping the House-passed Stupak-Pitts language out of his health care bill. He votes with the pro-life side only on less important matters or when the issue is already decided and his vote does not matter.”
And here’s what I said on December 8, after Harry Reid helped defeat the pro-life language in the health care bill:
“Today, 45 senators voted against covering abortion on demand in two new federal health programs — and 45 would have been enough, if Harry Reid had simply inserted the prolife language in the bill when he wrote the bill (It would have required 60 votes to remove the pro-life provision, which had already been approved by the House.) Instead, Reid once again complied with the wishes of President Obama and of the hard-core pro-abortion liberals. To add insult to injury, and in the trademark Harry Reid fashion, he made a speech that tried to paper over his pro-abortion substance with hollow pro-life rhetoric.”
A few years ago I attended a ‘Woman’s Forum’ at UNLV with Harry and Kate Michelman, who at the time was president of NARAL. Kate introduced Harry as their “best friend” in Washington.
Prior to the most recent health care debacle, Senator Ensign had sponsored the law that would make interstate transportation of a minor across state lines to procure an abortion a federal offense. The bill finally passed with a veto proof majority, at which point Harry walked off the floor of the Senate and left it up to Dick Durbin to object to sending the bill to reconciliation, which meant it died for lack of reconciliation.
The law simply said that if an adult who was not the parent, took a minor from a state with a parental notification or parental consent law to a state without one for the purpose of procuring an abortion, it would be a federal offense. Who could be against that???
Apparently Harry Reid.
