(Lori Piotrowski) – By now you’ve seen the ads on television. You know, those ads that sound like a law firm searching for accident victims. These ads are indeed looking for victims, victims who may not yet realize they are hurt. These ads are asking you to call in, write, in, email your disapproval of Obamacare. They are asking you to let your representatives in Congress know that this legislation must be repealed.
Why the onslaught of TV airtime suddenly? Just as Speaker Pelosi predicted last year that only by reading the legislation would we find out what was in it, now we know, and it is frightening.
Setting aside the issue of “death panels,” Obamacare brings into existence a multitude of bureaucracy. It is not enough for the House of Representatives to decide to defund these new bureaus and offices—the bill has already seen that these are funded.
Buried deep in the legislation is a slush fund of $105 billion that is already appropriated to fund these new governmental entities. Heritage fellow Ernest Istook explains the impact:
Making years’ worth of spending decisions in advance is an attempt to handcuff the current Congress and prevent it from determining current levels of spending. … The funds in Obamacare are not budget projections but actual appropriations of money. Obamacare goes far beyond any precedent for making appropriations for future years; it is an outrageous effort by the former Congress to bind the current and future Congresses in this way.
Was this appropriation unknown to all members of Congress? Did Dina Titus and Harry Reid know about this fund? If not, then shame on them for not reading the legislation, even though both said they did. And if they did, then double the shame for adding this much “unfunded” funding to the national debt.
We’ve gotten rid of Titus. Now it’s Reid who has to go. We deserve far better representation.
