$14 Million Poured Into Georgia’s Special Election

$14 Million Poured Into Georgia’s Special Election

(Phillip Stucky, The Daily Caller News Foundation) – Political groups on both sides of the aisle spent over $14 million in advertising so far in the Georgia special election to replace former GOP Rep. Tom Price, according to a Thursday report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff raised an astounding $8.3 million in the first quarter of 2017, just a few weeks before the April 18 vote. The single largest advertiser was Ossoff, who placed $5.3 million on radio, TV, and cable ads since February, according to the report.

The second highest spender was Republican candidate Dan Moody, who spent $2 million in ads districtwide. Some of those ads targeted Republican front-runner Karen Handel.

Outside groups also spent a lot in the race, the conservative Club for Growth spent $500,000 on behalf of Republican candidate Bob Gray. Another group, Ending Spending, plans to spend nearly $1.5 million in ads in support of Handel.

The national Republican Party also got involved in the race. While the 11 Republicans largely attacked each other in ad spending, the GOP Congressional Leadership Fund spent $2.1 million against Ossoff directly, while the National Republican Congressional Committee poured $1.8 million against the leading Democrat.

President Donald Trump appointed Price to secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, opening up a safe Republican seat that Price held since 2005.
