(Gary Duarte of USNEF) – The March 22, 2015 LVRJ article by Cresent Hardy is the best and most balanced article we have seen over the past 10 years since we launched the US Nuclear Energy Foundation. Our organization supports researching the science behind nuclear technology and the Yucca Mountain studies.
In the beginning of this program, the DOE provided millions in funding to the State of Nevada for the purpose of “parallel study” for the science & engineering of Yucca Mountain. Nevada’s rural Counties did apply their funding for parallel study supported the science of the studies conducted by the DOE. Instead, of engaging in studies, the State misused their share of the funding to oppose the science and engineering, not by proving but by “accusing” the DOE of “junk science.”
Congressman Hardy should be applauded for his reasonable approach to addressing Yucca Mountain. He is absolutely correct in that it is “Time for Nevada to talk about Yucca Mountain.” Harry Reid and the State should stop misleading us as they have been for the past three decades.
Eight of Nevada’s Seventeen Counties have signed resolutions for the completion of the Yucca Mountain License Application review and people need to recognize the leadership Congressman Hardy is bringing to the table. The nation has a need for geologic repository and if it can be done safely, Nevada should be at the table to assure its role in development and operations, not sitting on the sidelines with no other purpose than to frustrate the process. It is time for leadership and thankfully Congressman Hardy is showing us what that looks like for a change.
