The Nevada News & Views staff and I are back from the 2026 ConservaCruise to Mexico and…what a blast!
Hope some of you join us for the next one. Great way to solve all the world’s problems and make new friends…like these folks I met from San Franciso.
The lady in the orange top on my left was celebrating her 42nd birthday with her mom, grandmother, sisters, and husband – and asked if I’d take a group photo of them at the end of the ‘80’s Rock-and-Glow party on the Lido Deck.
Afterwards, I jokingly informed them that I “identify as black” and asked if I could get a pic with them. What followed was a lesson in race relations we should all follow.
One of the sisters replied, “Hell, yeah. That cracker needs some chocolate!”
We all then moved to the bar and the ribbing continued. I noted that I was new to this “black thing” and asked for some tips.
Naturally, they ordered me a shot of Hennessy and proceeded to give me hair care tips, rib recipes, and how to make gang symbols.
I ended the evening with, “Good night, folks. I gotta get my black ass to bed!”
Our stomachs hurt from laughing so hard.
You see, you don’t heal the racial divide by pretending differences don’t exist. They do.
You get past those differences by focusing on what we all have in common.
Celebrating a birthday with family is one of them – and I was grateful this “honky” was welcomed to join their festivities.
A little bit of humor – especially self-deprecating humor – can go a LONG way to bridging the gap.
There was nothing “mean” about the jokes – in either direction. It was simply a good-natured celebration of differences to break the ice.
Of course, the race-hustlers will use it to “prove” racism. The rest of us should ignore those idiots and use it to END racism.
That’s the AMERICAN way.
Pro Tip: In “first contact” situations like this, don’t talk politics! 😊
