A Blunt Message for Nevada Voters – Capitalism, Socialism, and What’s at Stake
Amy Groves joins Alan Stock to urge Nevadans to vote, even if they skip some races. They praised several candidates for focusing on real issues and working across differences. They also discussed Question 7, women’s voting rights, and their concerns about socialist candidates. Groves shared how her visit to Cuba shaped her views on capitalism and freedom.

I want to thank you so much for joining us on this big Thursday morning. It’s Thursday. It’s got to be Nevada News and Views Thursday, which it is a great resource for news and commentary, local, statewide, and national. Nevada News and Views. Go to nevadanewsandviews.com to find out more about Nevada News and Views. I read it every day, and you should too. It’s really a great source again of information as well as commentary. Representing Nevada News and Views today is the director of the Coalition for Housing Freedom, and that is Amy Groves. Amy, how are you doing?
Amy Groves 0:34
Well, fantastic. Thanks for having me on today.
Alan Stock 0:37
I appreciate you taking the time to join us. I wanted to talk about because you texted me about the idea that it’s so important that people get out and vote. I mean, we can talk about all the issues and talk about the races that are going on, and I know that not everybody likes everybody on the ballot. But I’ve I’ve been saying for weeks and weeks now, or longer than that. You know, if you don’t like somebody? Maybe leave that blank. A lot of people don’t know who a lot of the judges are. Okay, fine, leave them blank. But there are so many other important things people know about that we’ve got to vote in from the governor all the way on down to the two questions on the ballot as well. I mean, people have got to get out and vote. Don’t just sit and complain and moan and groan. Got to vote.
Amy Groves 1:22
100%, absolutely vote. If you just want to go vote in the governor’s race and no one else, go vote in it. We need every vote is important, and every person you want to vote for is important. I highly recommend everyone get out there.
Alan Stock 1:37
No, absolutely the case. You highlighted in one of your columns that you wrote for Nevada News, a recent column, by the way, about three of the Nevada candidates who are running for office, and I’ve had them all on, and they’re all great candidates. And there’s something that goes along with each one of these. I mean, they tied them all together. Erica Neely running for Assembly District Nine, Kelly Chapman running for the 41st Assembly District, and my good friend George Harris running for the eighth Senate District, a state Senate District. But all of these people, all these people have talked about the issues. They have come out and they have actually talked about specifics about what they want to accomplish when they get to office. It hasn’t just been a bunch of platitudes, and and I I have deep respect for all three of them.
Amy Groves 2:34
Absolutely, I have deep respect for all of them, and they’re such great personalities that they they know what they want to do, and they know how to talk about it, and they invite people that have an opposite opinion to talk, and they can work with everybody. And I love that common theme about all of them. They’ll be fantastic when they get elected.
Alan Stock 2:54
They will be, and I think it’s real important to again to get out there. These folks are not involved. None of them in in mudslinging. They’re out there dealing with the issues, and again, they’ve addressed the issues. And I think it’s so important right now. I have a, I Nevada is different than the rest of the country. I mean, I’ve separated for months now us from the rest of the country. No matter what people think, good or bad, positive or negative, whatever. I don’t. I don’t about the rest of the country, but Nevada is is is a different kind of an animal. We are independent, and we have been. You know, we’ve got a great governor that’s accomplished a lot in the first four years. He could accomplish a lot more if he had more people in the assembly in the state senate backing him, and that’s what we’ve got to concentrate on this this election.
Amy Groves 3:46
No, we absolutely do. And you know, the governor, since he didn’t have as much support in both houses there, he did a great job vetoing the things that actually would have been harmful and that would have taken away our independence and our wild west of Nevada that we’re that we’re known for because we are independent free thinkers and we need support to continue that way.
Alan Stock 4:07
Yeah, there are people in the state legislature that would like to californicate Nevada, and with that in mind, we say to people they’re more than welcome to come here from California. But if you if you the reason you’re leaving is because you voted in the policies that you’re leaving as a result of. Don’t you know? Don’t vote that way here. We don’t need that here. And we’ve got two questions on the ballot. Also, the biggest, the most important one right now is question seven, which was passed by nearly three quarters of the populace last election, we need two in a row to make it part of our constitution, and that’s to make sure that people are citizens and that they have a voter ID when they vote. I mean, that’s all. It’s very, very simple.
Amy Groves 4:52
It’s extremely simple, and it’s such common sense. I believe it is going to pass wholeheartedly, and it will become part of the constitution. For Nevada,
Alan Stock 5:02
I think so too. I think people understand that. I mean, you should have to be a citizen, and you should have to have an idea to show that you know you’re a citizen, and and and then vote. But we we know in too many cases people have been voting around the country who have been found to have been illegals, people not citizens, and you know some of the news folks on TV. Leslie Stahl is one of them on 60 Minutes, and others, you know, go, oh, you know, it’s only a few people that have done this. Only a few. It shouldn’t be one person, but when somebody says it’s only a few, you know, I mean, I mean, to me, that’s that’s absolutely insane.
Amy Groves 5:44
No, it is, and in Nevada, I think they’re coming up with. I think I saw last week an article from the White House that said 20,000 people in Nevada have voted in the last few elections that were illegally they shouldn’t be voting. And you know, we’ve had races here that have been won and lost by six votes, seven votes. Those could have absolutely turned our our races around. So no, even one, it it stops the integrity of our elections, and it it just people will suddenly go, I’m not going to vote because it doesn’t matter, and they need to know it does matter. If you are a citizen and you have an idea, like I hope it passes, vote. It is your absolute right to vote and help govern how our state will continue. So every every person who votes that’s illegal absolutely makes people not want to vote, and we need to stop it.
Alan Stock 6:33
It’s a right. It’s an obligation to vote. I mean, you know, a lot of countries don’t have this. They don’t. I mentioned earlier in the show today, you know, you take the the the countries that live under Sharia law in the Middle East, 57, I think, countries, if I’m not mistaken, with that number. You know, they they don’t have constitutions, and women, by the way, don’t just run out and vote or become part of the the mix. You know, the social mix; they’re they’re kept wearing these, you know, burqas where you can’t see them. This one woman was playing a call to prayer the other day. You’re going to see her left eye out of it. Everything else is covered up. You know, this this is not this is not how we we treat women in America. We have the 19th Amendment, which says that women are as much equal as men when it comes to voting.
Amy Groves 7:25
It does, and you know, I was thinking about that the other day because in my lifetime, I have known women that actually didn’t have the right to vote. Right, my great grandma, when I met her, you know, when I was younger, she’s gone now. She didn’t get a vote when she was born. It was illegal for women to vote, so we have to vote. We have to honor the women that came before us, those pioneers that gave us the rights we have, because we are equal and our vote counts just as much. And we really, as women, need to get out there and vote.
Alan Stock 7:54
Yeah, for no other
Amy Groves 7:56
reason. We we have to support the women that came before
Alan Stock 7:59
us. Yeah, and as free Americans, we’ve got to vote as well. Stay with me. I want to talk about something else because we have we have people who are socialists running in this election. I know you’re a raging capitalist. Yeah, you know you believe in working hard and you earn what you what you are able to get by working hard. There are people out there who are running and they are running as with endorsements of and as members of the Democratic Socialists of America. So I’m not just labeling them socialists; they’re actually socialists. I want to talk about that and more when we come on back. We’re talking with Amy Groves. She’s director of the Coalition for Housing Freedom. This is Nevada News and Views Thursday, and she’s representing Nevada News and Views today, and we’re going to continue our discussion with her in just a moment, right here on 1015 FM KDON. And we want to thank you so much for joining us on this big Thursday morning, Nevada News and Views Thursday, and representing Nevada News and Views as well as the Coalition for Housing Freedom is the director of the Coalition for Housing Freedom, Amy Groves. You know, I want to talk a little bit about you. You and I are dying in the world capitalists. I, I’m not claimed to be a multi-millionaire, but I believe in the in the opportunity for people in this country to be able to to be able to to make as much as they can to work and use the their their their God given talents to be able to make whatever they can, and you’ve got the the Democratic Socialists of America trying to make inroads here in Nevada, and there are two Trojan horses that are running now with endorsements from the DSA. One is Vinny Spottleson? I’ve talked about him many times. He’s he’s claimed that he only joined the DSA to get their endorsement. But I’ve always said, wait a minute, wait. So what what if you join the KKK to get their endorsement? You don’t you don’t abide by their racist attitudes. I’m just asking the questions. I don’t know the answers. And then you’ve got Alex Persilani, who is also running, and he is another socialist, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. And these, I mean, these two people are they’re like Trojan horses trying to get in and and get you know socialism give it a foothold in Nevada. We can’t afford for that to happen.
Amy Groves 10:26
No, we can’t afford for that to happen. I mean, their platform is a day without capitalism. What what does that look like? And you know, they want the largest companies to be owned by the government. Can you imagine Amazon being run by the government? I don’t think it would be as efficient. I don’t think the prices would be as good. There’d be problems. Capitalism has built this country and built a lot of countries. It works great. Gives you opportunity. It gives you ambition. You can do whatever you want to do as long as you’re willing to learn and get there. This country is amazing. We we need to stay capitalist. It’s a fantastic system.
Alan Stock 11:03
You know, people in countries that are not capitalist, and you look at Cuba. I know some people say, “Well, I don’t know. I haven’t been to Cuba. I don’t know what it’s like there.” Okay, well, I haven’t been to Antarctica, but I know it’s cold. You know, so okay, so but but Cuba is a it’s a communist dictatorship. People don’t have freedom there. I mean, that’s the closest example right to the United States. They’re 90 miles off of our Florida, you know, shores there. Well, I’ve been to Cuba. I’m sorry.
Amy Groves 11:30
I’ve been to Cuba. You’ve been to
Alan Stock 11:33
Cuba, and
Amy Groves 11:33
I’ve been to Cuba, and there were signs everywhere along the boardwalk in Havana. Women don’t be alone. No guns. They were saying everything they couldn’t do, but the violence against women was real. The poverty was extremely real. The racism amongst Cubans, amongst each other, depending on skin color, was absolutely real. It was such a learning experience, and we were there with a group of Americans on a person-to-person tour sanctioned by the government, and Cuba is not a place that we need to be. We don’t need to emulate them. They are not where we need to go. Socialism does not work for them. The Cubans will tell you it doesn’t work for them.
Alan Stock 12:14
It didn’t work for the people in the Soviet Union. They broke up after many many years. It’s not working great for the people in North Korea. They’re not free. It’s people in Red China are not free, and you know I mean, and again, you have people who are coming into this country and and throughout Europe trying to turn us into a an Islamic left wing communist socialist society, and this is something that we’ve got to we’ve got to be alert about, and we’ve got to fight against. You you lose freedom, and it’s I mean very hard to get it back. Soviet Union went away. That’s an unusual example, but man, it’s hard to get freedom back once once it’s been lost.
Amy Groves 13:02
Correct, and it’s all we know, and we don’t need to lose it. I will fight to not lose it.
Alan Stock 13:08
Absolutely. Listen, I appreciate what you’re doing and and the efforts you’re putting out on behalf of all these candidates. And you’ve been a great loyal person when it comes to all of these issues, and and I appreciate you taking time to join us this morning on behalf of of course the Coalition for Housing Freedom that you’re director of, as well as Nevada News and Views, very important resource for information and commentary. And it’s always great having you aboard, and we’ll do it again very soon. Let’s hope we have a great election. We’ll talk after the election and hopefully celebrate together.
Amy Groves 13:46
Great, thank you so much, Alan.
Alan Stock 13:48
