She’s one of the neat people that you meet if you hang around long enough in a community like Las Vegas, she is Annie black. She is a former member of the assembly, and she might be a future Member of the Assembly, or maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe she might be a member of the State Senate, and she joins us, believe it or not, in studio, she made she had a free afternoon, and she came all the way from Mesquite, and is joining us in studio. How you been? You’ve been like you’ve been amazing. You just disappeared. When was the last time that you you were out and about?
Annie Black 1:06
Well, I’m out and about all the time for work for politics. It’s been a minute. I worked for make Liberty win super PAC, and we did a bunch of stuff all over the country, actually, in red states. I was their endorsement director for a while. That was the last thing I did politically. But you know, as my friend Chuck Muth says, The only way to get politics out of your veins is with embalming fluids. So I guess I’m back, baby.
Kevin Wall 1:31
Oh, I love that. I absolutely love that. Let me just ask you, how did you end up going? Going, going, going dark, so to speak.
Annie Black 1:45
So I was in, oh man. It was a whirlwind. I started in the on the mesquite kitty count, mesquite City Council. And then I was midterm. It was like, hey, run against Chris Edwards and take him out. He’s a rhino. He voted for the world’s biggest tax increase, or at least Nevada’s largest tax increase, and I ran against him and beat him against the odds, and then got ahead of my skis and ran for Congress and then lost. So that was the last race that I ran.
Kevin Wall 2:14
Okay. Explain what’s going on here. When we sit down at noon to do the show, we have a cut sheet, or a guest sheet, which gives you, it gives me the the opportunity to look and see who’s going to be on the show. And it’ll say, you know, Joe Blow congressman. Or tomorrow, it will say Mark amo day, Congressman CD two. He’ll, he’ll be on with this and and it just is a reference for me. In your particular case, we didn’t know what to put. You’re a candidate in district 19, which, which is wonderful, but for district 19, but there’s a proviso that it may not be district 19 State Assembly. It might be in the State Senate. Explain what’s going on here.
Annie Black 3:13
Yeah, so I think, I think I was supposed to come on January 7, and we were going to talk a little bit about January 6, because I was there and I couldn’t make it. I had appointments. But I think you know what’s happening there is, I don’t think anybody expected Jeff Stone to retire, and he’s not running for re election, and it’s a blood red district. My seat, my Assembly seat, and our state senate seat are super red, and so my thought is, why wouldn’t we have a real hardcore Republican in those seats when we can? And it’s rumored that Danielle gallant is also going to be running for that state senate seat, but she is not turned out to be the most conservative of people
Kevin Wall 4:02
explain, explain the deal there.
Annie Black 4:05
Well, I go like the first thing I can remember was sometime the beginning half of last year of 25 she went on to say something about how the taxpayer protection pledge was a weapon for insiders. So she was bashing the taxpayer protection pledge, which, if you won’t sign that, I don’t really know why any Republican would vote for you. She also co sponsored a assisted suicide bill. So the right, you know, rights or life’s rights. People anti abortion, anti assisted suicide. People are not very happy about that. That’s obviously a big conservative issue. And when I was in the legislature, I was on the HHS committee, and I actually was, was the deciding factor on whether that was going to go to the floor that bill, that assisted suicide bill. Anyways, I fought against it. And then the big thing. Was during this special session, there were some questionable votes made on the film tax credit. So she voted to allow two legislators that were out of the legislature, they were not there, to vote on the bill remotely. If she and a couple of other legislators had not done that, the film tax credit bill would have died before it was ever introduced. So between those couple things, and I’m sure there’s other things, if I went back and thought about it, but those are the biggies to me, so.
Kevin Wall 5:33
Okay, so what do you want to do? And by the way, you want to make some news?
Annie Black 5:39
No, I mean, as of right now, I’m a candidate. I’ve announced my candidacy for assembly district 19, my old seat, and Jeff Stone just announced, I think, last week, that he’s not running. So it’s all fresh. It’s all new. I don’t think Danielle’s even officially announced yet, but as soon as Jeff got out, you know, Senator Stone got out, everyone started calling me, saying, You need to run for that seat. And so I’ve been looking at it, but no decisions have been made. So, wah, wah, wah, sorry.
Kevin Wall 6:11
Well, so, so, so tell me what you want to do.
Annie Black 6:14
Um, I want to win, and I want to go back drive people crazy.
Kevin Wall 6:19
And we in the media absolutely love, love it when you make people crazy. Is there a amount of money that you need to raise to do a state, state senate bid, as opposed to an assembly bid?
Annie Black 6:36
Oh, yeah, that state Senate race will be way more expensive. You know, Danielle’s got the benefit of already being in the assembly. And let’s be honest, the political insiders are not going to be a fan of mine. That means the lobbies, the the rhinos, the people that hate everything that I stand for, which is conservatism, are going to be fighting against someone like me being in there.
Kevin Wall 7:03
What is it that you need, whether you run in 19 or you run in the Senate, what is it you need from my listeners to maybe nudge you, to nudge you in into into going for the Senate.
Annie Black 7:18
We need to raise money. That’s really the defining factor so gallant raised, I think, don’t quote me on this, but I believe she had about 200,000 raised in her last Assembly election. Granted, I don’t think she had an opponent, but it’s fair to say, you know, we’re going to need that plus plus to to how much I would guess. I don’t know. I haven’t really gotten into the math, but I think it’s at least a quarter of a million dollars. Wow, which is crazy, because, you know, these are $16,000 a year, or a session or term jobs. So it’s, it’s clearly not for the money. It’s not a, not a job that does anything but cost you money, because you got to go up there, you got to live, you got to go back and forth and travel, and it actually loses you money if you own a business. But it’s kind of crazy to think that it costs that money to win a state legislative seat.
Kevin Wall 8:14
What do you want to do if you had the money? What would you want to do?
Annie Black 8:20
My preference, would be for we don’t know. I don’t know. I think, I mean, you know, I can make the case for both. To be honest, I really can. What I want to do is what I did when I was there the first time, wherever I end up, I want to win. That’s the first thing. And then the second thing is, when I get up there, I just want to propose amazing legislation that the Democrats will never pass. Make them go on record that they won’t pass it, as well as the rhinos, and show people who they truly are, whether it’s in the assembly or the Senate. I’m going to do the same thing.
Kevin Wall 8:53
Annie, it’s great to have you in studio. Thank you so so much. When you make your decision, and when do you need to make your decision.
Annie Black 9:01
Oh, sometime soon. Sometime soon.
Kevin Wall 9:04
Okay, when you make the decision, I want you to come on back with us and talk a little bit about what the challenge will be. It’s going to be fascinating. Well, it will be an interesting race. Again, not knowing who else is going to be in the right do you ever have any idea who else is in the race?
Annie Black 9:21
I don’t think, I don’t think there’s anybody else, and I don’t want to sound, you know, conceited, I don’t think that there’s really anybody else that would have a chance to to win, other than me in that Senate race.
Kevin Wall 9:32
Well, we’ll find out. We’ll find out together. Annie, really good to have you in studio. Thank you so much for doing it. Coming back anytime? Okay, you got it? Annie black, she may be running in district 19. What’s the Senate District?
Annie Black 9:47
Oh, my gosh, I don’t even know the number. That’s not a good sign!
Kevin Wall 9:53
Ah! Annie black, joining us. Stick around, more to do as we continue on Am, 670, km, Z, Q.
