MUTH’S TRUTHS
Is History Repeating Itself in CD2?
In the 2010 Nevada GOP Senate primary, Sue Lowden entered as the early front-runner, ahead of Sharron Angle and Danny Tarkanian for much of the race.
Harry Reid’s pre-primary attacks on Lowden weakened her standing, and the primary became a volatile three-way contest where small shifts could decide the outcome.
Club for Growth then came in to swing the race toward Angle.
The group backed Angle and helped finance a late surge in her campaign – increasing her advertising, outreach, and visibility among ideological voters.
Because the primary was split among three candidates, that concentrated outside spending moved the result with a relatively small number of additional votes.
By the end, Angle had become the insurgent conservative choice while Lowden lost momentum and Tarkanian split the anti-Establishment vote.
Angle won the nomination, and the help from Club for Growth was a key factor in tilting the primary away from Lowden.
She went on to lose the general election to Reid.
Yesterday, Club for Growth endorsed Dave Flippo in the 2nd Congressional District GOP primary race and committed to spending $400,000 to boost his campaign.
Ye be warned, northern/rural Republicans.
