Annie Black announced her switch from running for Assembly to Senate District 20, citing the unpopularity of incumbent Danielle Gallant. Black discussed her article on Susie Lee’s exaggerated claims about abortion rights in Nevada, noting that abortion has been legal in Nevada since 1990. Black also addressed a misleading media story about ICE using a child as bait.

Well, today is Nevada news and views Thursday. We have a different person on every week representing Nevada news and views. We’ve had Annie black on before, and she’s joining us this morning, and we’re gonna talk about some other things right now, but after we come on back from the break, in just a few moments, we’ll tell you about something very special that she’s getting involved in big, big stuff, and we’ll tell you about that in a minute. But Annie, good morning. Welcome back to Vegas at eight.
Annie Black 0:28
Good morning. I love spending Thursday morning with you. Alan, you’re the best.
Alan Stock 0:32
I think you’re fantastic. And let’s talk about this article you wrote for Nevada news and views. By the way, if you want to find out more about Nevada news and views, go to Nevada news and views.com Nevada news and views.com and one of the best sources you’re going to find for local, state and national news as well. Really, I mean, I check it every day. You wrote an article about Susie Lee, who happens to be my Congresswoman. By way of disclosure, and I’m not bragging, by the way. And, yeah, condolences, yeah. But you know what, when the Democrats have nothing to run on, they always rely on what
Annie Black 1:21
fear? Fear, fear
Alan Stock 1:24
and abortion, abortion is always thing that they fall back on. Well, abortion, I mean, we’re going to take women’s rights away and everything like that. So she wrote, so she’s came out against what I mean, obviously, she’s against the Supreme Court decision that came out. And she’s wants people to feel that there’s fear that women’s rights of abortion in Nevada, Nevada in particular, be taken away. And you write about the fact that’s a lot of hooey, yeah.
Annie Black 1:53
Well, if exaggeration and drama burned calories, Susie Lee would be in Olympic shape, that is for sure. So she’s out there acting like women in Nevada don’t have the freedom to make their own medical decisions, and that row has been, you know, being overturned as a federal law was making it illegal for women to get abortion, but it’s already been legal for women in Nevada to get abortion since we voted on it back in 1990 so the overturning of Dobbs didn’t outlaw abortion, or Dobbs didn’t outlaw abortion, it kicked it back to the States, to the voters, and Nevada voters already decided on it.
Alan Stock 2:31
So abortion is legal in Nevada, and she was trying to say, women are going to have it taken away. But right now it’s, it’s not in the Constitution, but it’s part of our law, and the only way it can actually be taken away is by by people voting it out. And that’s not going to happen anytime soon, right?
Annie Black 2:53
Exactly. And you know, what’s funny about the whole thing is it just reminds me of the the covid situation, right? It’s the same crowd that’s always lecturing us about bodily autonomy. They were the same people that were forcing our kids to wear masks, our grandparents to die in nursing homes, and firing us from our jobs for not wanting to get vaccines. But by all means, my body my choice when it’s convenient, right?
Alan Stock 3:15
And yeah, again, as you write during covid, it wasn’t conservatives forcing medical choices, it was the Democrats, in fact. So Susie Lee trying to sound the alarm on women losing their right to choose is not and then she wants, what she wants to do is initiate a national law, trying to get people behind a national law, when actually what, what the Supreme Court did was send it back to the States, which is right. Some states will be most states. Most states will be very easy with abortion, no no two ways around it. They’ll allow it, and some states have have given some slight restrictions. But most states are going to allow it, and have allowed it Nevada, one of those states Exactly.
Annie Black 4:06
Well, I mean, it’s like people in California are going to vote different than people in Oklahoma, and that’s okay, and let the states and the people that live in them decide what they’re going to do on these sensitive issues, versus a blanket thing across the country.
Alan Stock 4:18
That’s why people are moving into Oklahoma and out of California, by the way. I just want to say, you know, Oklahoma doesn’t have a greasy haired Governor anyway. Let’s not get into that. Well, he’s, I mean, he went to Davo, Switzerland to taunt Donald Trump, and he made a fool out of himself. I mean, he really did. I you know, and knee pads and all that stuff. And you wonder why he’s thinking about knee pads. An unusual guy, very strange guy, and he will not get the nomination for president, even though he may want it. Let’s talk quickly about another twist that one of the media had done. Democrats try to put out false claims and and manipulate how people view certain things. They create a narrative that’s not true, and this is the one about the little boy who was kidnapped by by ICE taken away from his parents. And wait a minute, they didn’t do that. Go ahead.
Annie Black 5:19
Another awesome story out of Minnesota. Minnesota is in the news for all the wrong reasons these days, but there basically there was a school official that said ice was using a five year old as bait to get his father. And the media obviously ran with it, and it caught a big, dramatic headline for a minute, except for that, that was if you read past the headline, and saw that the kid was actually abandoned by his dad, who was fleeing from ice. So there was no bait, no trap, no child endangerment. The kid was literally abandoned by his own father. But you know, that’s just the way of the media these days, right? Very salacious headlines, knowing that most of these people aren’t going to read past that, and they’re just going to believe whatever they see in the headline,
Alan Stock 6:04
yeah, some people said in the media, oh, there, the boy was thrown into into a jail or something like that. And the truth, truth is, is that when the father abandoned the boy, a father abandoning his own son, that’s unconscionable. And when they did, and a lot of ice people at border patrol went after the father, but one fellow stayed back to take care of the child, to make sure he was totally okay, and that he had the food that he wanted, and everything, you know, he was totally All right, psychologically, emotionally as well as physically. And they went to the mother and said, Oh, we’ve got your son here who was abandoned by the Father. You want him? And she said, No, I don’t want him. Oh, that’s a great mother. It’s a great mom. Good, good mother of the Year award. So then they had to wait. When the father was eventually picked up and caught. He said, I’ll take my son back. And of course, when they took the son to with the Father, to holding areas, the son went with him, instead of being left out in the street in the cold because mom didn’t give a crap.
Annie Black 7:10
Yeah, it’s really sad. I mean, it’s Minnesota, it’s winter time. Imagine being a five year old kid and seeing all this going down. Thank God for that agent who stayed there to take care of the kid and make sure he was safe and not terrified. And he was a hero instead of a villain, the way he was being painted.
Alan Stock 7:28
I saved a life instead of taking a life. Ah, this is nah. This can’t be right. This is all right. I want to come on back and talk about something else. We have talked in the back. You made an announcement on this show that you were running for the assembly. This is some weeks back, and now you’ve changed your mind. You’re not going to run for the assembly, but you are running for something, and I want to talk about that. We come on back. Annie Black is joining us, and we’re going to talk about the the office she’s running for, and what the issues are going to be all that and more coming up on Vegas today, after we check in with traffic and your fox five, First Alert weather update and a good morning. Great to be with us on this Thursday morning. It’s Nevada news and views Thursday and joining us for Nevada news and views this morning is Annie black, one time assembly woman, also a local city councilman. I think at one time, I believe up there, yes, Yep, yeah, and you are going to be a candidate for the assembly again. You announced that on the show, but you’ve decided, and you switched around, what are you running for? And what made you change your mind?
Annie Black 8:37
Yeah, I decided to run for Senate instead. The hero of the special session just Senator Jeff Stone, decided he wasn’t going to run for re election, and I was happily chugging along in my assembly race, and I started getting all these phone calls and messages from people saying, we think that you should run for Senate. Everybody kind of knew Danielle gallant was going to jump in. Assemblywoman gallant was going to jump into that Senate race, but I found out since Jeff Stone decided he wasn’t going to run for re election, that Danielle is very unpopular with the grassroots conservatives and voters, and this is a blood red Senate District, one of the few, and I may be the only one in Southern Nevada, and She hasn’t been as conservative as she’s sold herself to be, and you will be,
Alan Stock 9:26
I will be, but you are. I will right. I am, I said. Neil Diamond song, great song, by the way. So what? What is? What are they going to be the two main issues in this campaign, in the campaign itself, what are going to be the two main issues as you see it?
Annie Black 9:49
Well for voters, I think the issues are going to be cost of living, that still continues to be a huge thing. And then school choice, I think, is also a big one. So we’ve already started talking about. Legislation to propose. One of those is being abolishing the property tax across the board for everyone. We haven’t worked out the logistics, but it’ll be something similar to what Governor DeSantis is doing in Florida. I also want to have a flat vehicle registration. There’s also some other bills that I’ll bring back from when I was in the assembly, as far as, like, a Tabor type bill from from where do they have that in Colorado? So lots of stuff that’s going to reduce government, reduce how much money people have to pay, and also give parents the ability to pick where their kids go to school, and the Money Follows the student. So I prefer a voucher program over anything else. And so those are some of the things. We’re still working it out, but some of
Alan Stock 10:46
the stuff, Democrats are clamoring to initiate a state income tax.
Annie Black 10:53
No, yeah, that would be great, wouldn’t it? We already have super high vehicle registration. I think we have one of the highest sales taxes in the nation, but no state income tax, and I think that would totally devastate our state if we implemented a state income tax, but I’m not surprised Democrats want one.
Alan Stock 11:11
Well, I’m not either the people would have to vote for it in order to be able to get it initiated, and I can’t believe that the people would vote to for a state income tax even those who have moved here from California moved because they wanted to get rid of, get away from the high taxes over there. And I can’t imagine people wanting to initiate high taxes here. That just doesn’t make sense at all. If people want to find out more about your campaign for the state senate district, and I think it is which district is that I’m looking at 20. How could they do that?
Annie Black 11:48
Then go to elect Annie black, Comm, a, n, n, i, e and black, like the color, elect any black.com and we are working on a bunch of new stuff. Obviously, this was not really on my radar. So we’re moving everything around. So the website’s still being worked on, but you can go to there and check out some of the issues and also donate if you’re interested in
Alan Stock 12:09
doing that. Excellent, excellent. I appreciate you taking time to join us this morning to talk about some of the issues and to announce the fact that you’re running from the State Senate again, state senate district 20 and and I think it’s going to be an incredible race. We’ll talk more about it the race in the days ahead, perhaps we’ll even host a debate. We’ll see what happens. But Annie, thanks for being with us. I appreciate it.
Annie Black 12:35
You’re the best. Thank you, Alan, it’s a blast, as always.
Alan Stock 12:38
All right, take good care and good luck to you.
Annie Black 12:42
All right, you too. Have a good day.
