From Disagreement to Demonization: How We Got Here

People often ponder if it’s possible for the United States to be reunified politically.

While political differences have always been a part of our political landscape, the divisions have become more pointed and more numerous.

Today the leftists in our society have not only latched onto the campaign against the Trump administrations’ immigration policies, but many have become more fervent in their proclamations that one form of violence or another are what’s really needed to battle the political right.

That has made us not only a more divided society, but a more dangerous society, as well.

The radicalization of immigration certainly began under Barack Obama when illegal aliens were held in what some called cages while children were separated from the adults they were with when they entered the country.

Obama began deporting many of these illegal aliens and for that even the left-wing demonstrators labeled him the “deporter in chief.”

But when Trump took over, the political left-wing along with the sympathetic heritage media portrayed Trump as the most virulent anti-immigration president in history. They completely ignored the “illegal immigrant” issue.

The real radicalization, however, was crystallized on the day that the Biden/Harris administration officially took office in January of 2021.

While Joe Biden took his oath of office, tens of thousands – perhaps hundreds of thousands – of illegal aliens poured across our porous southern border, many wearing t-shirts that read, “Thank You Biden Harris.”

The media was basically silent and when they did report on the hordes of illegals coming into the U.S., it was always with a point of view that was sympathetic with their plight.

So, now when the Trump administration seeks to put things back to normal and deport all the illegals who decided to feed off the generous give aways our country offers citizens without asking for citizenship identification, the left screams Trump is a fascist.

The so-called mainstream media stands with the political left cries, all the while chanting “amen.”

So, is it a wonder when left-wing politicians and Democrats seeking political office call for violence, their cries are seen as little more than frustration with an insensitive administration?

A Michigan Democrat Senate candidate wasn’t shy about what she would do if she saw Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh out in public.

It’s kind of reminiscent of Congresswoman Maxine Water’s suggestion during Trump’s first term on what people should do when they saw members of Trump’s administration out in public.

The Michigan Democrat Senate candidate said if she saw Justices Barrett or Kavanaugh at a tailgate party she wouldn’t be able to control herself and that, “there would be beers thrown in peoples’ faces.”

Not only does one think about the words spoken by Maxine Waters, but it’s a clear reminder of what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said back in 2020 when he targeted Justices Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch when during an abortion rally, he said, “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

Schumer later walked back the quote, saying, “I should not have used the words I used yesterday.” However, you can never un-ring the bell.

His words suggesting he would be very understanding if violence came their way if they decided the wrong way was something that his followers all heard.  And those who were not mentally stable could have interpreted it in any conceivable way.

So, yes, people in the U.S. today are wondering with the political divisions being so deep in this country and so fractured, can we put the pieces back together again.

Is there any way for our nation to tolerate political differences without resorting to virulent name calling or suggestions that violent acts are an acceptable means to a political end?

We better accept the challenge to find that way.
