Galant Bill Gives Nevada Taxpayers Relief from Overpaid Property Taxes

(John Latshaw) – A big “thank you” to Assemblywoman Danielle Galant for introducing Assembly Bill 449.

The bill would allow Nevada taxpayers to receive a credit against property taxes in cases where they should have received a partial reduction in taxes but did not.

Joe Hart of KRNV notes that “829 people in Washoe County recently found they have incorrectly been paying the high cap rate.”

“People should not be forced to pay if there is a mistake,” Gallant said in support of the bill

Currently, there are partial reductions in property taxes available for certain types of properties in Nevada. However, if a taxpayer disagrees with the application of a partial reduction, they must submit a petition for review to the county assessor by June 30th of the fiscal year.

AB449 would allow taxpayers who paid more in property taxes than they should to request a credit against their property taxes for the next fiscal year. Any unused credit could be carried forward to subsequent years.

The proposed legislation would also streamline the process for taxpayers to appeal decisions related to partial reductions. If passed, AB449 would provide relief to taxpayers who have overpaid in property taxes and ensure that they are not unfairly burdened with unnecessary taxes.

Overall, the bill aims to create a fair and just taxation system for Nevada taxpayers. Homeowners extend their gratitude to Assemblywoman Galant for introducing this important bill.
