Going to War over Pete G’s Baby Food Tax

Going to War over Pete G’s Baby Food Tax
Chuck Muth
August 30, 2010

(Chuck Muth) – As you may recall, Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea (R-Another Planet) went on Sam Shad’s “Nevada Newsmakers” program last week and threw his support behind a new $500 million tax on….groceries.

That would be bad enough if a tax-happy Democrat had proposed it….but why in the world would the Republican LEADER in the state assembly propose something to insanely preposterous right smack dab in the middle of this Great Recession? Can this man see his pancreas from where his head is apparently located?

Well, we’re not taking Mr. Goicoechea’s bread-and-butter tax lying down!

So starting this afternoon, Citizen Outreach will be sending out an automated phone message to Nevada citizens letting them know about Goicoechea’s fruits-and-vegetable tax and give them the opportunity to just “press 1” and be connected directly to him. Here’s the message going out:

“This is a critical taxpayer alert from Chuck Muth and Citizen Outreach.

“Last week, Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea proposed a $500 million tax on groceries. That’s right, rather than force government to tighten its belt and fund only truly essential government services, Assemblyman Goicoechea now wants to tax your milk and butter and eggs and cheese.

“If you don’t want your groceries taxed, Press 1 now to be connected directly to Assemblyman Goicoechea. And tell him to put government on a diet instead of taxing your fruits and vegetables.”

If you want to contact Assemblyman Goicoechea yourself without waiting to receive the automated call from us, his numbers (as listed on the Legislature’s website) are (775) 237-7383 and (775) 237-5300.

Oh, and here’s his legislative email address: pgoicoechea@asm.state.nv.us

In addition, there are a number of GOP candidates running for office this year who have not signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and, therefore, might very well be supporting Goicoechea’s plan to tax baby food and cereal. One of those candidates is John Ellison, running up in the Elko area.

Ellison was recently endorsed by Goicoechea in a letter-to-the-editor in the Elko Daily Free Press because Ellison is facing a serious challenge in the general election from Janine Hansen – an independent candidate who is far more conservative and far better qualified than Mr. Ellison and who HAS signed the Tax Pledge.

So we’re sending out the following automated phone message to voters in that Assembly District this afternoon, as well:

“This is a critical taxpayer alert from Chuck Muth and Citizen Outreach.

“Last week, Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea proposed a new $500 million tax on groceries. That’s right, rather than force government to tighten its belt and fund only truly essential government services, Assemblyman Goicoechea now wants to tax your milk and butter and eggs and cheese.

“More troubling, Mr. Goicoechea also recently endorsed John Ellison to represent you in the Nevada state Assembly. Does Mr. Ellison agree with Assemblyman Goicoechea that you should have your fruits and vegetables taxed? Press one now to be connected to Mr. Ellison and ask him.”

If you’d also like to contact Mr. Ellison without waiting to receive the automated call from us, his listed work number is (775) 738-6284.

Mr. Ellison lists his cell phone on the Elko County Commission website, but we didn’t want to run up his cell bill….’cause we’re such nice and considerate people!

Fellow taxpayers, if elected officials and candidates can continue to believe they can propose tax hikes after tax hikes and we’ll just quietly sit there and take it….they’ll keep proposing tax hikes after tax hikes instead of making the tough budget-cutting decisions they SHOULD be making.

So stop what you’re doing right now (reading this email) and pick up the phone and call Assemblyman Goicoechea and candidate John Ellison and let them know in no uncertain (but preferably profanity-free) terms that you do NOT support higher taxes, especially on groceries!
