Nevada Opts In: A Major Win for Nevada Families During School Choice Week

Posted By

(Nevada Policy) – As the National School Choice Week comes to its end, we have important news to share for Nevada families!

Governor Joe Lombardo has announced that Nevada has officially opted into the federal tax credit scholarship program, opening the door for new education opportunities for students across the state.

What does this mean for Nevada families?

This federal program allows individuals to receive a federal tax credit (up to $1,700) when they donate to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). Those organizations then provide scholarships to K–12 students for education-related expenses such as private school tuition, tutoring, technology, and other learning supports.

Because Nevada has opted in, families here will now be able to benefit from scholarships funded through this program—bringing new options and resources into the state without creating a new state-funded program.

Simply put: more flexibility, more opportunity, and more support for families looking for the best educational fit for their children.

Why does this matter?

Nevada families have been asking for more education options, and this decision creates a new pathway to expand access—especially for families who have been priced out of alternatives. Importantly, this program does not take money away from public schools and does not require new state spending.

It also ensures that Nevada families can benefit directly, rather than seeing federal tax dollars flow to education programs in other states.
