(Nevada Right to Life) – Nevada Right to Life, the state affiliate of National Right to Life, commends President Donald Trump for nominating Justice Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court to replace Justice Antonin Scalia. In nominating Justice Gorsuch, President Trump appears to have taken another step towards keeping his promises to pro-lifers to be a pro-life president and to appoint pro-life Justices.
The importance of nominations to the Supreme Court to the pro-life movement cannot be understated. For too long unelected judges on the Supreme Court have manufactured decisions out of whole cloth like Roe v. Wade, exercised “raw judicial power” to implement their own views on abortion against the will of the people and the constitution and have deprived the people of their right to be their own rulers.
Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life says “All too often, our efforts to protect unborn children and other vulnerable humans have been overridden by judges who believe they have a right to impose their own policy preferences.” “We are heartened that Judge Gorsuch appears to share Justice Scalia’s view that federal judges are constrained to enforce the text and original intent of constitutional provisions, and on all other matters should defer to democratically elected lawmakers.”
Douglas D. Johnson, Senior Policy Advisor for National Right to Life believes that “Pro-life legislators and activists nationwide can have high confidence that as a Supreme Court justice, Neil Gorsuch will not join those who have nullified past efforts to protect the lives of unborn children and other vulnerable humans.”
Justice Gorsuch’s nomination and confirmation does not yet mean that there are enough votes on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. There would still be 5 votes for abortion on the court. His confirmation to the Court likely means that until another pro-life justice is confirmed to the court, the court will uphold abortion limiting laws being proposed and passed in the states like the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which would ban abortion after 20 weeks.
President Trump appears to be keeping his promise to be a pro-life President and to nominate a pro-life justice to succeed the late Justice Scalia. Those promises were a crucial factor in his election. The pro-life issues provided a 13 percent advantage to candidates in the November election and a substantial amount of Trump supporters cited his nominations for the Court as a very important reason for their vote for him.
Pro-lifers have been working for 44 years to place constitutional and pro-life justices on the court to dismantle and overturn the un-American and undemocratic Roe v. Wade decision which, along with Doe v. Bolton, struck down abortion laws in all 50 states and imposed abortion on demand without apology through all nine months of pregnancy. We have won many elections and deserve to have the makeup of the court reflect our successes. We will not be denied. We will keep working and working until we get a court that reflects America’s great founding principle that all are created equal and possess the unalienable right to life.
We salute the President and will be looking forward to additional opportunities for him to fulfill his promises.
