(Neal Morton |Las Vegas Review-Journal) – The Clark County School District will spend nearly $140 million to offer across-the-board raises for teachers that the Clark County School Board approved late Thursday.
In a unanimous vote, the seven trustees ratified a new, two-year contract for all 18,000 teachers who work across the county. Many new and beginning educators have praised the $135.5 million package, which boosts the starting salary for teachers from $34,637 to $40,900.
District and union officials have cited that higher pay as an opportunity to make Las Vegas schools competitive in teacher recruitment.
Long-time educators, however, offered mixed reviews of the new contract, with some complaining that it won’t address the increasing number of teachers who leave or retire from the district.
