Teenage Car Thief Caught Because He Couldn’t Drive A Stick Shift

(Thomas Phippen, The Daily Caller News Foundation) – A would-be carjacker couldn’t figure out how to drive a stick-shift, even with a lesson from his victim.

A 17-year-old Cleveland, Ohio, man allegedly cooperated with another teenager to steal three cars at gunpoint and commit armed robbery in February, according to police.

The duo was caught when they tried to steal a car on Feb. 21 evening — their second car of the day — and couldn’t figure out how to operate the transmission.

The 17-year-old forced the car owner out of the vehicle with an airsoft pellet gun, and both alleged thieves got into the car, according to police. As the car owner stood outside the vehicle, the carjacker waved the gun and demanded the man explain how to operate the stick shift, the Associated Press reports.

When the teenager couldn’t figure it out, the two jumped out of the car, took the man’s cell phone and car keys, and fled on foot. Police were able to track the stolen cell phone and caught the two later that night.

Earlier in the evening, the two teenagers approached a woman who was exiting her car at a Walgreen’s pharmacy. The older teenager pointed the pellet gun at the woman’s side and said, “Hold up, you know what time it is.”
