Tequilan or Republican?

Tequilan or Republican?
Chuck Muth
March 22, 2011

(Sara Crusade) – Endeavoring to capture the essence of the conservative Tea Party, Latino Democrats in Nevada have pondered creation of the Tequila Party. According to an article printed last November in The Lookout online; Latino community leaders considered creating the Tequila Party as a way to pressure the Democratic Party to deliver on Latino priorities, much as the Tea Party has shifted the Republican Party back toward constitutional principles.

If the idea behind creation of the Tequila Party is about pushing the Latino agenda, why then is Las Vegas mayoral candidate George Harris registered as a member of the Tequila Party while touting himself as a Republican at Clark County Republican Party events? According to Jon Ralston in a Las Vegas Sun article back in December, Harris and his business partner, Irma Aguirre, filed papers last year to form the Tequila Party of Nevada.

According to Ralston, Harris is a former GOP officer. Apparently, after learning that the Nevada Latino Democrats intended to create the Tequila Party, Harris hijacked the idea and filed first. The question before Las Vegas voters now becomes whether or not Harris speaks the truth when he labels himself as the only true conservative in the mayoral race. In a recent interview with this reporter, Harris responded to issues of illegal immigration by denying illegal Mexicans pose a major problem. Instead, Harris deflected illegal immigration woes on illegal immigrants from Russia, Canada, and the Middle East, which Harris proclaimed make up the majority of undocumented workers in the United States, despite the fact the Pew Hispanic Center has documented that Hispanics, primarily Mexicans, make up the majority of illegal immigrants to this country.

A comment on this issue was requested from Harris, who has been non-responsive as of this writing.
