UNLV College Republicans call on Dina Titus to distance herself from threats made to students

UNLV College Republicans call on Dina Titus to distance herself from threats made to students

(NN&V Staff) – Last Thursday, Las Vegas City Life published an article containing a public threat to the UNLV College Republicans by Chairman of the Nevada State Democratic Party Sam Lieberman.

Lieberman stated, “If I were the young Republicans, I’d not be messing with Dina Titus, who is returning to their turf.” The College Republicans believe this threat suggests Dina Titus may seek retaliatory action against students for bringing to light an issue of integrity stemming from the former congresswoman’s re-election bid last fall, and are calling on her to distance herself from those threats.

“We urge Dina Titus to publicly disassociate herself from these threats,” said Mark Ciavola, president of the UNLV College Republicans. “No student should be left wondering if Dina Titus will seek retaliation for their involvement with our organization, or for exercising their right to free speech.”

The threats came in response to an effort by the UNLV College Republicans to have UNLV and Nevada System of Higher Education officials comment on a cheating incident that took place in a debate during last year’s election. That effort was stepped up with the launch of a website documenting the entire issue, and questioning Dina Titus’ integrity.

“It is unconscionable that a state Democratic Party would threaten students for having a public discussion about public events, and I sincerely hope that Ms. Titus will not allow these threats to stand unchallenged.” concluded Ciavola.
