(Congressman Joe Heck) – The news that current Central Intelligence Agency Director, Leon Panetta, will be the next Secretary of Defense and General David Petraeus will then replace Director Panetta as head of the Central Intelligence Agency is promising for our national security.
Director Panetta’s long history as a fiscal hawk will help address what current Secretary of Defense Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mullen, have called the greatest threat to our national security, America’s debt. Director Panetta is a strong choice to help identify potential Department of Defense savings for the American people which won’t jeopardize our national security. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I look forward to working with him to identify and enact Department of Defense savings that don’t undermine America’s national security.
General Petraeus’ commitment to America’s security is unquestionable, and his success in missions where others have struggled is heartening. His intimate knowledge of the current environment in the Middle East is an asset to the Central Intelligence Agency and America. As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I look forward to working with him to ensure the Central Intelligence Agency has the resources needed to maintain America’s freedom and operates within the law.
