(Barry Herr) – We live in extremely trying times. I believe it is time for major fiscal changes here in the great state of Nevada. If one takes a look at our neighboring state of California, once the envy of the nation, we can see what overspending and outdated liberal policies have accomplished.
At one time California was known as the “land of a second chance” – jobs were plentiful, wages were high and life was easy. If Nevada doesn’t quickly change course now, our state will follow, and in some cases we are following, in California’s footsteps. Those footsteps are a bankrupted economy, no jobs, over taxation, home foreclosures, and businesses closing on every corner. Now doesn’t that sound eerily familiar?
So, instead of watching from the sidelines while Nevada slips into the California sunset, I decided to be part of the solution by running for State Controller on the Republican ticket.
I am a fiscal conservative and I know I have solutions for the State economy and for the government in general. My background is a perfect fit to help Nevada get back on its feet. As State Controller, would I have any political influence? I can influence the legislature to cut spending and try to halt any ideas of implementing a state income tax, which my Democratic opponent has suggested. I will be a conservative voice in the midst of an extremely liberal, pro-spending culture in Carson City.
Nevada has afforded me many opportunities for success. Twenty years ago after much discussion with my wife, we decided to move to Nevada from New Jersey, which was entering a recession after the election of a Democratic governor. My in-laws had retired in Las Vegas in the mid 70’s (back then Nevada was practically recession proof).
Shortly after we arrived, I enrolled at UNLV to complete my education resulting with a BS in Accounting. While working for McGladrey and Pullen CPAs, I obtained my CPA certification. My daughter graduated high school, earned the Millennium Scholarship and went on to UNR where she earned her degree in Secondary Education.
Early on we were able to purchase a home because of affordable home prices and low taxes. Nevada was a land of opportunity in the 1990s and early 2000s for families and college bound students like my family and me. I eventually started my own CPA practice and became an active member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. I am the current the President of the Nevada Society of CPSs-Las Vegas Chapter and have taught at UNLV as an adjunct professor.
I am the Republican candidate who has the qualifications and economic background to promote change in the business environment here as well. Not only does Nevada need someone with business acumen, but the state also needs fiscally conservative men and women to make critical decisions at a time when spending has gotten completely out of hand.
The state needs to diversify and attract people from all walks of life. Nevada does not need higher taxes as many would like to you to believe – lower taxes and a lower cost of living environment is what attracted people like me and many of you, your parents and your grandparents to Nevada in the first place.
So let’s not go the way of California. Fiscal and social conservatives, as well as moderates and independents need to get involved in changing the climate here in Nevada. Let California (and the nation for that matter) take a look at us and desire what we have once again. Let Nevada once again move forward towards prosperity, without the overspending of the past.
I believe I can be one voice in the wilderness. Get involved and vote for me in the primaries in June and the general election in November. Let your voices be heard once again at this crucial time in our state and our nation and fight for your family’s future.
