(Tom Townsend) – After reading “New accusations of racism leveled at tax assessor,” in the 3/17/11 edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, I must agree with those who support Assessor Shirley Matson with regard to her concerns about whether Nye County verified certain workers’ citizenship. And since knowing English is a requirement of citizenship and the workers in question apparently did not speak English, I must disagree with Sheriff DeMeo’s claim that assessor Matson is at all “racist.” It was that lack of English that should have been suspicious especially to the Sheriff. As for the Sheriff’s criticizm of racial profiling is concerned, as a law enforcer he should also realize that racial profiling is a valuable and natural tool in crime fighting. If serious crimes are committed in his jurisdiction and the description of any fugitives includes the person’s race, hopefully he doesn’t waste many resources investigating those of other races.
Of course, in 2006, when the Pahrump Town Board adopted ordinances that the Sheriff did not like, he played the roles not only of COP but also judge and jury, stating that the ordinance was unconstitutional and that he would not enforce it. This demonstrates that his lack of courage and loyalty to this land in the face of the illegal alien crisis is nothing new.
If Sheriff DeMeo cannot explain these apparent contradictions to the satisfaction of his constituents, then it is his replacement we should be discussing, not that of a patriot like Assessor Matson.
